VIDS RECS from Vividcon 2013 Challenge
Sep. 11th, 2013 06:29 pmChallenge Amenesty
bradcpu's Thrift Shop (remakes) - LOLZ, entertaining concept and great musical combination. A cinematic thrill of a vid. The "I wear your granddad's clothes" section was especially satisfying.
ghost_lingering's Shephards (Firefly & Pulp Fiction) - Again, a spoken word vid was my favorite of a vidshow. I love everything about what this vid chooses to be. The way the three back stories are essentially the same was something that I needed to see in vid form. Book, Jubal Early, and the Operative were the same piece in the game at different levels of the game so to speak, parallel to Jules in Pulp Fiction. I still remember realizing that intentional vid connection during the Challenge discussion and I felt like a genius, lol.
anoel's We Don't Care (The Wire) - I'll never get tired of vids about the kids' season on The Wire.
milly's Mineshaft (Game of Thrones) - Ros, how I love thee and how her story was woven in this vid. Dessa, how I love thee too.
sisabet and
sweetestdrain's The Sellout (multifandom) - Troublesome, yet ultimately satisfying storylines, which probably says something about me as a viewer.
absolutedestiny's Age Like Wine (vidder's catalog) - Those programs look hella impressive and daunting. I love introspective and self referential things like this.

Reason I love tumblr: Part of what I tried to show in my Firefly/Serenity vid, the girl or the weapon?, condensed down to a clean and brillant image.
VID RECS (VVC disc 1 - premieres part 1)
Sep. 9th, 2009 01:11 pmMy class ended early today and I took advantage of the time to watch VVC DVDs, leave feedback, and make some recs. Look at my productive self. I'm all caught up with my college courses for today, but tomorrow is another story when we get more assignments. College makes me sleepy.
VID RECS (VVC disc 1 - premieres part 1):
halcyon_shift's VVC Premieres Intro 09 Star Trek In 60 Seconds (Re-enacted by Llamas) - Massive LULZ.
DC's We Are (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) - Calculated action, beautiful overlays, great pacing, and interesting lyrical interpretations.
bradcpu (and
laurashapiro)'s Hard Sun (Firefly) - This is the vid that knows where I live.
I love the sounds in the beginning and how it just flows into the vid with all the twists and turns. Love the ivory tower. Love it like burning. It's amazing how well it all fits together and feels so right to me. It's like it couldn't be any other way than to see the lens flares at 1:09 blend together. The introduction of the rain is beautifully done and I love how the vid continues while the original footage is of walking away at the end. It's so full of love and appreciation that it bubbles up inside me and makes me smile and feel a bit better about certain things. There is sadness in the vid, like in the 2:20s when they walk away and the weeping, but I'm ultimately left with the crews and happiness.
jarrow's Learning to Crawl (Battlestar Galactica) - DAYUM, that's hot and I want to make out with it. There's so much tension and sexiness in the tight editing. Beyond the femslash and sexiness there's deep character beats within the vid and that's something beautiful.
mlyn and Jo's It Comes and Goes In Waves (Varg Veum) - Beautiful use of the source with the beautiful framing compositions and colors. I love the progression of the vid and how it changes into something so dark and violent, yet still beautiful with the changes in the music. The symbolism and emotions are so engaging that I connect with the vid without knowing the source.
hollywoodgrrl's Marble House (Doctor Who) - The editing and atmosphere is stellar. I think my favorite parts are the use of the watch in the instrumental section because it's so finely edited and heartbreaking. Honestly, the whole thing is edited with great skill.
At first I was reading as the Doctor has the choice to run off in the TARDIS, while the humans have to stay and face the fights. The Doctor plays with humanity, including John Smith, without having to face the darker aspects of it. He can go hands off whenever he wants. The Doctor can deal with aliens fine, but he doesn't stick around for humanity's darkness. That he leaves to us (and Torchwood I suppose). The Doctor leaves humanity to its own darkness. A darkness that isn't supernatural, but coming from within ourselves, which makes it all the more frightening, especially for The Doctor, who wants to love humanity. He just wants to run away from the darkness in our hearts.
dualbunny's Video Killed the Radio Star (Wizard of Oz - Elphaba [Wicked]) - I don't know Wicked very well, but I still was able to enjoy the vid. The motion and jumpcuts in the editing are great. I love how you take the footage and have us look at it from a bit to the left. The zooms make the footage more interesting and grabbing, while it also has me thinking about the scenes differently in my mind because they look different than I'm used to. It's so fun and even more fun with femslash goggles!

Vids that exist on a meta level, working in more ways than one, often suggesting a basis beyond the individual fandoms of the source andmore about a larger concept and/or fandom itself. Vids that go beyond the narrative of their source, commenting on the nature of that narrative, connecting with outside meanings, or placing the story in alarger culture context.
Everytime I thought we had a good description I'd realize it was excluding some type of meta or possibility for meta. I had no idea how tediously difficult it would be a write a definition for what meta vids are. We went for a wide range of meta topics, so I hope people didn't look at it and reject the vidshow in the basis that it's not what they consider to be meta. Meta has a wide variety of possibilities and these vids are some of them:
( On to the playlist! )
Questions? Comments? Suggestions? While this was the playlist for meta vids used in the vidshow, I encourage others to drop links in the comments to other meta vids. Feel free to spark discussions as well. I'm sure they'll be notes coming from the meta panel and I'd love for online discussion as well.

this will be my year
Jan. 2nd, 2008 04:23 pmMy New Years Eve was rather crappy, so I’m going to pretend that 2008 begins on January 2, so that my year doesn’t start horribly. Please indulge me in this delusion.
I think a softer world sums it up fairly well.

Aug. 29th, 2007 03:38 pmTwo of the greatest things I’ve ever seen:
White House pranksters wrapped Rove's Jaguar in plastic wrap and Portrait of President Bush Created Out of Porn Magazines by Johnathan Yeo
This semester I’ve started my Ashland classes and I’m taking one LCCC class still. I have Foundations in Literacy, Teaching & Learning Process, Intro to World Religion, Workshop Teaching Intervention Specialist, Assistive Technology for IS, and Sensory Motor for IS. I have unbelievably long days on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30am to 7:45pm. Starting soon I’ll have another student teaching, which will eat my life. This semester I plan to not have any friends, never go out, barely have time to eat, and probably never sleep.
VID RECS:
absolutedestiny’s Rodeohead (Firefly/Serenity) - It puts smile on my face just thinking about. It’ can slip of from farce to dramatic to comedic to vaguely creepy and then right back to farce.
aycheb’s Quantum Theory (Children of Men) – A quiet, somber, and lulling feeling vid, yet harsh with great build.
bradcpu’s Working Class Hero (Firefly/Serenity) – I completely fail to explain what it is about this vid that hits me except that it’s one of the truest messages of Firefly and Brad is able to get that across with subtle movements, music matching, clip connections, deep thinky thoughts, and THE SHINY.
cherryice’s Only (Battlestar Galactica) – A complex web of The Four with deep thought and beautiful motion.
dualbunny’s Cosmia (El Laberinto del fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)) – I’m in awe of the song use, the treatment of the material, the eccentric editing style, the odd jump cutting back and forth, the music matches, the movement and motion, the framing, and EVERYTHING.
obessive24’s Jesus for the Jugular (Carnivàle) – The vidding equivalent of being fucked gently with a chainsaw.
sdwolfpup’s The Loyal (Children of Men) – An amazing vid that stuck with me.
sisabet’s Falling for the First Time (Supernatural) - It's sweet and endearing, yet vaguely... dare I say heartwarming...

i'm always late with these things
Jan. 5th, 2007 11:33 pmI got my grades for last semester and they’re not bad considering it was the first full semester I worked during, but I got a B in Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers and Art History II, and an A in Introduction to Biology (with my time consuming lab grade smushed in) and Introduction to Mythology. The sucky part is that I was .78% away from an A in Art History, not even a whole percent. Oh well, I thought I was going to fail Art History and I was worried about my Mathematics and Bio finals, so it’s all good.
I took a slight break from the internet over the holidays to spend time my family and friends. Thankfully, the family didn’t fight as much as I thought. All my Christmases were great and my New Years was awesome too.
I decided to finish the season one Dexter character vid if it killed me. When I finish, I’ll slowly go through my backlog of lj posts, emails, messages, etcetera, so hopefully I’ll be caught up soon so to speak. I don’t have much of the vid left either; just some tinkering, beta-ing, and then saving. It’s crazy and weird, so I’m not sure it will go over well. I’ll have a rough cut soon if anyone wants to check it out and give me their opinion...
I’m behind on feedback because I don’t watch vids while I vid, but I do have a rec from before I went into hibernation:
VID REC:
bradcpu’s My Little Drum - A House vid with amazing music, just the right touch of Christmas, sadness, happiness... It has a nice flow and great clip connections, overlays, and it takes the whole first season and presents it beautifully.
Because cool people like me wait to do the end of the year meme things, I give you my first end of the year vidding meme: ( 2006 Vidding Meme )

Dec. 11th, 2006 06:16 pmChanged my layout (
kiki_miserychic) to the closest thing I will ever get to a Christmas-y layout. Also, new userpic, which is funny because it’s true.
I turned in my Introduction to Mythology final this morning. It was supposed to a simple 3 page report on Gilgamesh, but it turned into an 8 page report with the last 5 about Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Oops. I also took my Math for Elementary School Teachers’ final today, so I only have Biology and Art History finals left.
I also succumbed and got an imeem account, so be my friend. :)
( Torchwood – 1x09 – Random Shoes (Invisible Eugene) )
I just clicked a link to Jewel Staite’s blog thingy to read something about the Flanvention and freaking spoiled myself for something in the latter half of this season of Stargate: Atlantis.

mosh of everything
Oct. 2nd, 2006 04:35 pmI’m feeling much better now and I’m back to just feel tired and crappy like regular now, as opposed to sick, tired, and crappy. While I was sick I mainlined the first season of Doctor Who. I love it and it makes me love season two even more. I finally understand everyone’s love of Captain Jack. I really have nothing else to say because I haven’t really processed it having watched 13 episodes in 2 days. I’m contemplating a season one Doctor Who vid to Kate Havnevik’s Unlike Me (Acapella), but I really, really shouldn’t because I have three vids started right now, which is bad enough.

~Canceled Tour Photoshoot - A nine minute Ellen con Unwerth film of Christina Aguilera.
~Nobody’s Watching pilot Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 - Totally cute and funny unpicked up pilot made for the former WB with Billy from Battlestar Galactica and Kellerman from Prison Break.
~Promo for The Office’s Dwight and Angela, which tetters between sweet, creepy, weird, and awesome.
~I may very well have to start loving Keith Olbermann.
Speaking of politics, I watched Sherrod Brown and Mike DeWine on Meet the Press and I’m ashamed to be from Ohio. They fought with each other like 12-year-old girls. I’m surprised there was no hair pulling and screams of, “ohmygod, you broke my nail.” I’m leaning toward Sherrod Brown only because I don’t want to vote for Mike DeWine. It’s sad when I’m not so much voting for someone as much as I’m voting against someone.
Onto more shallower things that make me happy, ( Grey’s Anatomy Cast Spoiler )
For the Damaged Coda got Best Mood Piece Runner Up at Tolerable Cruelty Awards. Wee. It’s the first vidding award I’ve ever gotten (mostly because it’s the first vidding award thingy I ever entered)… so wee:

I’d like to thank my mom and dad for putting aside their hate for each other for 15 seconds to conceive me… Just kidding. Thank you to this months TCA judges (Nicky and Brad). And now I have bunches of new, lovely vids to watch and feedback. :)
I’d completely forgotten about putting in for a ljmindmap thingy:
