Uh... wow. To the uninitiated, this movie looks quite.. odd.

Anyway. I came for the Tricky, and any intended meaning's being completely lost, but still. Wow.

The movie is amazing. I love everything about it. Tricky fits very well with the feeling of it.

Set in the 1920s, a girl (Alexandria) staying in a hospital for breaking her arm while picking oranges is told a story. Roy, whose legs are paralyzed from falling during a stunt for a movie, begins telling her the story, but what she pictures in her head doesn't match his words because she's 6 and she speaks little English at first. The story is about bandits (the Masked Bandit, Otta Benga, the Indian, Luigi, Charles Darwin, and the Mystic) on a quest to kill Governor Odious for their various revenges.

The following contains spoilers for the movie, so ignore if you plan on watching...

SPOILERS BE HERE:

Roy was telling her the story to get her to bring him pills so he could kill himself. He tells her that she has to leave when he falls asleep. A lot of real life circumstances seep into the story Roy is telling the girl. At the end of the movie it is vaguely revealed that the basic plot was taken from the movie Roy was in when he was injured. After he takes the pills and he's falling asleep when the girl inserts herself into the story to save them. The pills didn't work and he throws a fit. She thinks he needs more pills to feel better, so she sneaks into the pharmacy to steal them, but falls from the table. She has surgery, Roy visits her, and she begs him to finish the story. He continues the story, killing nearly every character and making his character a coward drowning in 3 feet of water. She makes him change the ending, the hero winning. As they recover a screening of the movie is given at the hospital, which includes the scene where Roy was injured. The ending is left a bit open with the girl returns to working in the oranges groves. The girl says that her mother took her to the movies and told her Roy was a stuntman in them, so she imagines him doing all the stunts in the movies she watches. The happy ending implies that Roy's legs healed and he got work as a stunt man, while the less happy and more realistic ending implies that the girl's mother lied to her because one clip is given of Roy as the stunt man. The first time it is a different actor, but it's Roy when replayed.

This, my dear, is some truly spectacular crazy shit. I didn't think Lee Pace could be hot in a long sleeveless man-dress, but you proved me oh-so-wrong. Hawt!

When I first watched the vid I thought of it as Bootystyle's similarly fucked-up sibling. But now upon rewatch I'm seeing it much more as a strangely beautiful and moving tale, full of fairytale monsters, heroes and villains underpinned by the friendship between the sick man and the little girl. It feels a lot more innocent than Bootystle in a lot of ways, though no less beautiful. It's a gorgeous vid, and I totally need to hunt down the movie.

From: [identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com
Thanks!

I had a desktop wallpaper of the movie on my desktop when I was vidding. My friend saw it and asked if he was wearing a dress. She eventually watched the movie and text me that it was the hottest dress she'd seen since Neo in The Matrix.

Both this and Bootystyle come from the same direct and he uses many of the same crew and locations, so they have a lot in common visually. The Fall is FAR more endearing and sweet, but it still has a screwed up level to it. I had to leave it out because it didn't work, but it's implied that, if anyone, the little girl is in love with the nurse because she brings her into the story as the love interest. The little girl also loves Roy on a level. In real life she kisses him on the forehead, but it's made to look like she kisses him on the mouth in the story.

Watch the movie. Do it DOOOO EEETT. :)

oh my god, what is this move? why is it not in my life yet?!

this is such a gorgeous vid! i love everything about it. the contrast of the beautiful fairytale world with all those rich colours & fantastic happenings - and then the depressing hospital surroundings is amazing. and the movement & shiny, and ... *flails* i love it so much!
and then it's like the two worlds collide & merge, and the depressedness of reality (or something) invades the dream world - heartbreaking and still so lovely.

and tricky, WHEE!

*runs off to watch the movie*

The Fall is a beautiful movie. Possibly the prettiest movie I've ever watched.

It's very much about the nature of storytelling. Thanks for the comment. I think the vid is successful if one person goes and watches the movie! Even though I kind of killed the ending...

Oh WOW!!!!!! I have so much love for this! I don't know where to start. And wow, that is THREE vids on my list of 'must write an essay of feedback to these' now! I am so sorry I got flooded by Fail (personal and communal *G*) and didn't get here for so long...

I will be reccing this and probably writing spammy thoughts about it for a long long time to come...

oh my! I have a very personal relationship with this movie, I wasn't kidding about it being my favourite. It pushes a lot of my personal buttons (in a good-bad way). So watching your vid was enlightening in a way of finding out how someone else sees it the same but different. I particularly liked the way you started making the hospital footage flicker and become like the black and white silent movie footage, blurring creation with reality. It's beautifully constructed. And wow that 'keep living' refrain is so poignant. At the same time as the lyric 'I believe in people dying' works in opposition-connection to it. I'm not expressing this properly yet... I need to flail a bit more first.

Eeeeeee! THE FALL VID! \o/

I have no idea what the fuck is going on in this vid but it doesn't seem to matter! (Well that's not true, I'm sure it would be even more awesome if I did know). But the whole concept of storytelling is so well framed and executed--the visual cues you use to slip in and out of the story-within-the story are just...holy hell I do not have an appropriate superlative. And your editing is monumentally gorgeous as always. I just want to knooow that little girl and her crazy, trippy, hopeful little mind!

This vid knocks my socks off. It's just gorgeous, and I'm impressed at how accessible it is to those of us who haven't seen the film -- I can follow the story easily, and I get so involved with the characters. Love it.

I posted a rec here (http://laurashapiro.livejournal.com/280635.html), with more blathering about the vid's general awesomeness. (:

When I was making the vid I decided I didn't care if people got the story or not. I only cared if people could tell that it was a story, so I'm glad it's coming off as accessible. I'm so in love with the characters and I wish I was a part of their story.

Thanks for the rec too. :)

The movie is so beautiful. I played with the color and added some effects at certain points, but the gorgeousness of the vid is due to the movie itself.

The drawing and the tattoos are a great scene in the movie where the guy is giving them directions that are shown in the Mystic's tattoos and Darwin writes them in his journal.

wow, after seeing that, i gotta be the 10,000th person to say that it's amazing. I never heard of the movie before, makes me want to watch it, so I can see the 2nd level of the video, where the words really match :)

from what I can see, I love the look of it- the imaginary scenes have a really good surrealist quality to them, with the over-saturated colors (and crazy shit happening like trees lighting on fire, lol).

I saw Nicole mention The Fall and realized I had never actually been over here to leave feedback for this. ;} (Possibly I still maintain grand notions of doing a vid-review for last year...)

The movie is always so sweeping and wistful in my memory, and I'm so intrigued by how you've played up the more disturbing, disjointed, and tragic aspects here, without ever being untrue to the overall feel of the movie. And I was especially fascinated with how you used that increasing level of "old film" at the end to bring everything back to the film-reel watching scene. I was so caught up in the added unsettling feel of the distressed film, that I had no idea it was going to dovetail so fittingly--it was a wonderful surprise that I still can't believe snuck up on me. ;D
