7. Point to a section from one of your favorite vids you've made and explain why you're proud of it.

In my recent, Runs in the Family (http://kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com/228911.html) Hannibal vid of Abigail Hobbs, the something to do with her grandmother’s / grandfather’s grandmother civil war soldiers who
badly infected her / my friend has maladies, rickets, and allergies that she dates back to the 17th century
part at :50-1:03 is what I'm most proud of. My brain really grasped onto all the parallels of Hannibal looking down at Abigail's mom and Alana and Abigail looking down at the blood her mom left on the cement and then going into Alana being infected. Then with Marissa's body and Abigail's dad's other staged bodies and Abigail's face and wave to her dad into him training her and then finally into the parallel of Bev and Alana seeing Abigail...

Honestly I'm still proud of that entire vid. It's the most my brain to actual timeline vid I've ever made. My brain categorized all of that in such a way that I made it a vid.

23. What do you look for in a beta?

I usually don't use a beta. When I do, I look for willingness mostly. Back when I tried to use betas traditionally I ended up in a lot of awkward situations where I didn't take people's advice. What I wanted out of the vid was different then what they wanted out of it. So I stopped using betas because my philosophy of vidding is fundamentally different than the majority of people who beta. I do use betas if I want to check something. For instance I tweeted that I needed someone to look at a vid and answer one question for me. Like for one I had them watch it and then read the question of if it looked like the woman was coming off as a rapist. It wasn't my intention, but without context, the clips could have been taken sexually, which I didn't want.

Basically, willingness to do it and the understanding that I might not take your advice. We can still be friends if we disagree, but it's my vid, not your vid.

33. Talk about a comment or review that made your day.

Hmmmmm, I'm going to say that I loved it when someone came up to me at Vividcon and asked if I would upload some older vids that they were interested in watching that had expired. They said very nice things about my vids. I'm hella awkward when getting "in person likes/kudos" for fannish things, but it really made my day because my morning had no been going well. That and I didn't think anyone cared about my old stuff. I'm working on reuploading everything, but geez does it take a long time.

7. Point to a section from one of your favorite vids you've made and explain why you're proud of it.

I answered this above, but I'll answer it as many times as people ask it because I am feeling vain.

In When I am Laid in Earth (http://kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com/219725.html), a Utopia vid, I'm super proud of :13-:25 because I didn't reframe anything and found all the points for transitioning in the source. The first is a graphic novel page from the Utopia manuscript that a character on the show created that transitions with that white circle perfectly over Jessica's entrance into the door, then the push in on the door opening to Jessica again, this time transitioning into the crumpled post it note of "utopia manuscript" perfectly. In the source Jessica's dad was thought to have put a secret into his manuscript for all of season one until the last scene where Jessica realizes that her father put the secret in her blood, hence all my transitions. Jessica is the manuscript.

16. Do you use any tools, like clip notes or storyboards?

I have a bonkers amount of vidding journals. I've taken to putting notes in the notes section of my iphone too, then I can search for the term I'm looking for in my notes. I have strange little codes for things that I can pull up. These are the clip notes I took for an abandoned vid. (https://twitter.com/kiki_miserychic/status/509090895124529152/photo/1)

I usually have clip progressions in mind and things I want to be sure and include. For example, with ***Flawless () I ended up taking the walls of my kitchen for vidding notes. (http://instagram.com/p/l8mB5mIv_2/) Some vids I take notes for differently. Close ups of ***Flawless clip notes one (https://twitter.com/kiki_miserychic/status/509089210562015232/photo/1), two (https://twitter.com/kiki_miserychic/status/509088767211495424/photo/1), three (https://twitter.com/kiki_miserychic/status/509088983339773952/). Everything in my clip notes did not make it into the vid because I had a culling process for the progression of the vid. I needed certain things in certain places and had more than enough to work with.

Vidding idea notes I generally scribble down by hand in my vidding journal. These are some notes for my Hannibal vid (https://twitter.com/kiki_miserychic/status/509092367753019392/photo/1). Most of it didn't make it in the vid because so much of it was tangential to Abigail Hobbs. But I had the idea, so I wrote it down. I generally write down everything and then pick out what I want.

18. Describe your perfect vidding conditions.

I go through phases where I vid in certain places all over my apartment or gramma's house. Right now I'm into vidding at my kitchen table looking at my view of a giant pond. It's GORG. As soon as I get my patio furniture I'm going to vid on my patio until the weather gets bad. I once vidded in a bathtub when I was in high school and living with my grandparents. I needed privacy while there were houseguests and someone online suggested the bathroom. It worked well.

I usually have a bottle of water or Snapple. I LOVE ME SOME SNAPPLE WHILE I VID. And fruit by the foot because I can eat it without using my hands.

Ideally I don't people in my grill every ten minutes. I visit family on weekends and it's like they know I'm vidding and find me to ask me something or show me something or tell me something.

It's nice when all my source files are working properly and my laptop isn't overheated.

And I'm not tired. Or overly hyper.

Or in need of a pee.

8. Which vid was the hardest to make?

Hmmm, I am forever messing up the technical parts of vidding. I'm exporting incorrectly and encoding wrong. But overall World Spins Madly On (http://kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com/225244.html) for festivids was the hardest vid for me. I had offered Night Watch and Day Watch for festivids, but I quickly realized I wouldn't be able to finish the vid I was working on, so I put it aside and started watching New Amsterdam to make a vid. Then I scrambled for a song. Then I had to actually vid it. The product ended up with poor pacing because I needed the song to fit the concept of being chronological, which meant the beginning was boring as FRELLING FRAK. Looking back I do enjoy parts of it, but I feel like it was a failure. I liked parts of the show, but not a majority of it. It had promise, but was really tied up and didn't iron out what it wanted to do and where it wanted to go. LOL, THE SAME AS I DID WITH MY VID. Nice epiphany I had there.

15. Do you work mostly from start to finish, or do you vid sections out of order?

I'm a bounce around vidder most of the time. I hit the sections I can see most vividly in my mind first, then work my way out from those places until everything connects.

26. Share three of your favorite vidders and why you like them so much.

OMG HOW COULD THIS MEME ONLY ALLOW ME THREE FAVES!?!?!?!?

I've been thinking about this questions since I got the comment notification and I was wondering when I'd work my way down to it.

AHHHHHH, CHOICES.

Ok, I know one is [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl because she has not only great vidding style, but also drops amazing verbal comment advice bombs too. Like at 1am tipsy she's all as vidders we control the beginning and end points of a clip. Take control and don't use where the original editor started the clip or ended it. Make them your cuts. And I'm sitting on the bed like truuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue, son, truuue with my mind blown and colors becoming more vibrant and then I cry myself to sleep because OF COURSE.

I'd have to say [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 because she has such a calculated approach to her vids. She knows exactly what she wants to do with her vid and she knows all sorts of little tools and tricks to get the audience there.

Lastly, I am forever studying how [livejournal.com profile] bananainpyjamas / dragonchic handles musicality and motion. I literally have put her vids in VLC player and watched them at .25 speed to hear and see exactly how she decided where and when to cut with the music and with the cut itself.

It helps that I'm friends with them and can e-mail them questions and try to rip off their sweet style, then call it an homage.

2. Is there a genre or style you've yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

Oh yeah.

I've been playing around a lot with motion, like the way dragonchic does it. All cool and flowy and hitting more than one level of musicality.

And I wanna try my hand at making a fake trailer. I have an idea for a vidshow at next year's vividcon. I'm obsessed with fake trailers. A lot of vidders have done them, you included, and it's interesting to see how many different approaches and styles there are.

No, I will try anything twice. Once to try it and once to prove I'm good at it.

4. How many vid ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?

OH LAWD YEESUS. I have ideas in the hundreds. I'm not kidding. A lot of them are abandoned because I'm the source or idea. Of those I have about 70 that I genuinely want to make. Some of them are simmering and waiting for the source to give me what I need (damn you supernatural for making me wait 4 years on a clip that isn't coming for 3 vids). Some are waiting on the source to be over, like True Blood. I really want to make a Tara vid that I've wanted to make since she became a vampire. I kept holding out the hope that the show would stop messing up with her storylines, but I was wrong as FUCK. But then they gave me the literal clip that proves the point of the vidsong, so like, I'm still going to make it.

19. How many times do you usually revise your vid before posting?

It depends on a lot of things. This is the one question I was hoping no one asked because sometimes I don't revise at all. I just go with the flow and do minor tweaks. Sometimes I agonize over things and do a couple revisions. I do tend to revise sections as a go. Like a twenty second bridge I'll fiddle with 10 times moving things three frames over until it looks like what's in my brain. Usually I end up doing one legit revision then 3 or 4 because I mess up technical bits and have to fix them.

31. Which is your favorite site for posting vids?

This is a weird one because I just started using critical commons and it's working nicely for streaming vids. I'm working out how to embed on LJ and in tumblr though.

YouTube is still the first place I upload. If it doesn't work there, I'll try someone where else.

I like posting on tumblr a lot too. LJ because of habit, but I think LJ vidding is dying a slow and painful death. I don't link things back to my LJ post the way I used to because no one is on LJ. There are tumbleweeds.

1. Describe your comfort zone—a typical you-vid.

WELLLLLLLL, current era me would have a super boring beginning so most people turn it off. Then lots of nudity and gore. Lesbians are a plus. The music is probably a female vocialist sounding all sad and shit. The cutting is gonna be SUPES fast because I think everyone watches vids too slowly for me. There's totes some jerky internal movement too with prolonged clips on people's beautiful faces. The movement is halting and goes back and forth in opposite directions in the clips.

There has to be too many levels of meaning for people to understand. Because that's how I roll. Seven layers deep like an Inception sequel with prequel flashbacks and alternate universes.

This is all stuff I enjoy, except for the super boring beginning. I'm trying to remember to make the beginning blast off even if I don't want it to if it's for festivids because people will skip it if the beginning doesn't KICK OFF.

5. Share one of your strengths.

Ugh. This is tough for me because I feel like there will be someone reading it and thinking that it's actually my weakness.

Hmmmm, I'm thinking and typing and thinking more and now I'm typing to stall for time, which doesn't make sense because I can delete this paragraph, but I won't.

Ok, I think one of my strengths in vidding is how I've changed what I choose to vid. The vids I make now are more my true personal taste then what I thought was my personal taste, but was really use fandom's influence on me. I went through a phase where I liked vidding popular shows because I thought it would get me more views. It kinda did, but now I'm so freaking happy to make a vid for a show I think two people watch. I'll make that vid and I'll be so happy with it and I'm fine making vids that even get released online because I made it and it made me happy and I want to keep it to myself. I started making vids when I was rather young and my views on so many things have changed. And I like the subjects I vid now. Like, go away sad white boys, I'm full up and only keeping Dean Winchester. That stupid fuck.

I HAVE MANY OF THESE, but I can only share one, so it has to be that I don't understand audience. I also don't care enough to try and understand audience. Yeah, I know that makes things difficult when submitting to cons, but like, BRUH, I don't wanna conform. lol.
