vid title: We Are All Connected music: Symphony of Science's "We Are All Connected", featuring Bill Nye, Carl Sagan, Richard Feynman and Neil deGrasse Tyson, was made from sampling The History Channel's Universe series, Carl Sagan's Cosmos, Richard Feynman's 1983 interviews, Neil deGrasse Tyson's cosmic sermon, and Bill Nye's Eyes of Nye Series. Carl Sagan's lyrics written by Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan and Steven Soter. source: season one of Stargate Universe duration: 3:15 |
summary: The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it, but the way those atoms are put together.

[deGrasse Tyson]
We are all connected;
To each other, biologically
To the earth, chemically
To the rest of the universe, atomically
[Feynman]
I think nature's imagination
Is so much greater than man's
She's never going to let us relax
[Sagan]
We live in an in-between universe
Where things change all right
But according to patterns, rules,
Or as we call them, laws of nature
[Nye]
I'm this guy standing on a planet
Really I'm just a speck
Compared with a star, the planet is just another speck
To think about all of this
To think about the vast emptiness of space
There's billions and billions of stars
Billions and billions of specks
[Sagan]
The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it
But the way those atoms are put together
The cosmos is also within us
We're made of star stuff
We are a way for the cosmos to know itself
Across the sea of space
The stars are other suns
We have traveled this way before
And there is much to be learned
[deGrasse Tyson]
I know that the molecules in my body are traceable
To phenomena in the cosmos
That makes me want to grab people in the street
And say, have you heard this?
[Sagan]
The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it
But the way those atoms are put together
The cosmos is also within us
We're made of star stuff
We are a way for the cosmos to know itself
(Richard Feynman on hand drums and chanting)
[Nye]
To think about all of this
To think about the vast emptiness of space
There's billions and billions of stars
Billions and billions of specks
[Sagan]
The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it
But the way those atoms are put together
The cosmos is also within us
We're made of star stuff
We are a way for the cosmos to know itself
Across the sea of space

Date: 2010-06-29 10:25 am (UTC)Wow, first, what an awesome track! Feynman samples! Awesome!
I'm going to say something (possibly) weird: I really liked watching this without any fandom knowledge at all, it made me go into the pretty patterns and the visual-concept connection flow... like a fractal! :D Very satisfying viewing on that level, which is not to say I think it would have been less satisfying with more knowledge--just that I felt really content and complete watching it.
They should play this at a comedown party after a rave... if there still were raves. *mourns the 90s*

I've always been a science nerd, so I geek out over space and such. The show, the song, everything, was like a nerdgasm.

Date: 2012-05-20 02:02 pm (UTC)I have no idea what's going on in the source, but the themes in this vid are so clear and coherent. People = stars = atoms = life. It's visually stunning -- both deeply cosmic and deeply humane.
It makes me sad that you think Rise didn't succeed -- I think it's so fiercely defiant of the show's message and passionately steadfast about ROBOT NETWORKS (like, the Cylons' insurgency in the vid mirrors OURS). But I love this one!

Date: 2012-05-22 03:47 pm (UTC)Not many people braved watching SGU, but it's my favorite one of the franchise. It's dark and centered on the characters and themes.
I think Rise succeeded, but it was so heavily mutilated in the end. I wish I hadn't needed to subvert things so much to get what I wanted for the vid. I wish I could erase so much of season 4.5. I love that I could manipulate it that much, but it was thrilling to see a scifi tv show go the route that I had wanted for BSG.
