In the name of procrastination, I'm succombing to the masses and gakking the vid commentary meme from Nicky and everyone else on my flist.

If you want commentary on any of my vids; if you're curious about my vidding processes, hairpulling, or goals; or questions about editing, effects, and whatnot, then post a comment and I'll get back to you. Seriously, if you let me, I will go on and on about vidding.

You mentioned once to me that you see colors first when coming up with a vid idea. Can you elaborate on that. And also on what makes you select a song. Do you get the story idea first and then find a song for it or vice versa?

When I hear a piece of music I associate it with a color... Not so much a color as much as a gradient I suppose. For example: Iron & Wine songs are all shades of brown, Metric songs are usually silvery pinkish, and Nine Inch Nails songs are sometimes orange or green. It's a bizarre, not actual form synesthesia, which comes in handy for vidding purposes. The best way I can describe it is closing your eyes and having a blobby, mushy screensaver playing. Relatedly, I see vids as squigglies. When I watch a vid I get a map of where I've gone in my head. When I do my own vids I almost never impliment my mental coloring because a 3 minute vid with a color gradient might not be as awesome as it is in my head.

For the most part the song nags me until I vid it. With Stronger Forest, Rockafellaskank, and The McKay Song I was introduced to them on a musical appreciation level before I considered vidding them. I knew I wanted to vid Hyperpower, Ramalama (Bang Bang), God's Gonna Cut You Down, SexyBack, Silent Night, and I Hear the Bells, as soon as I heard them. But for Volcano and For the Damaged Coda I had a concept and thought back on my music library to find something that would suit what I wanted to do.

Mostly, I start off with the song and what I want to say comes after, but Stronger Forest was an extreme departure from my usual process. I clipped out and watched all of the Sylar parts of season one and came up with a map of what I wanted to cover and where I wanted to go. I had been listening to Stronger Forest around the time when I got the urge to do a Sylar vid. I had my list of what I wanted to do, but I was unsure of the song to use until it hit me that the song I had downloaded previously was be perfect.

Wow. I am so seriously fascinated by you right now. I mean this --> The best way I can describe it is closing your eyes and having a blobby, mushy screensaver playing. Relatedly, I see vids as squigglies. -- it's pure genius.

Thanks so much for going into your process. I really appreciate it. :D

When I started vidding I thought everyone vidded the same way I did. Now I realize that was a silly thing to think.

I can't think of any other way to describe it.

Your vid, Ouroboros, as filtered through my squiggly color gradient viewing brain:
