Notes:
A long time ago I saw the most pretentious movie I’ve even watched in all my life, De Fem benspænd (The Five Obstructions). Basically, it’s a metafilm about Jorgen Leth being challenged by Lars von Trier to remake his 1967 short film, The Perfect Human (Der Perfekte Menneske), five times with certain rules. For the first obstruction, Leth has to film in Cuba and can only have 12 consecutive frames from a take. The second has Leth playing “the perfect man” in an extremely miserable place. For the third, Leth has no constraints. The fourth must be a cartoon. He must read the voiceover for a film about him that someone else directed under his name for the last obstruction. I found the film to be interesting on some levels, mostly on a vidding level. I thought it would fun to set constraints on myself. I set 5 obstructions for myself and was forced myself to follow them for this vid. My first obstruction was completing the vid in under a day and a cookie to anyone who wants guess at what my other 4 were.

If anything, this vid is one big “DON’T DO DRUGS!” ad.

I really like this. Especially the way that you don't just manipulate the images but also the audio. And I like the way that even though you're *mostly* using S4 footage, the history of how Shane got all fucked up in this way is palpable.

Awesome. I only had the one episode to work with, so I was limited to using just the clips of Shane/Carmen that were in the previously, but I wanted to start the vid with that so it was a "ghost" in the rest of the vid. :)

Completed in under a day? Argh, I could never, ever do that, especially not with results like these. The overexposed, harsh colorization really fits...great disjointed, disoriented feel in the editing that drives home your "DON'T DO DRUGS" angle. Having vidded a different version of the song, I'm struck by how well this sparse version fits Shane...I love her, but Jesus, such a freakin' mess in 4.01.

From what you said in the description and comments, I'm assuming that having one ep to work with was one of the other four "obstructions" -- I'm interested to hear the others :)

The under a day obstruction wasn't something I could get around because I had a 30 day trial of Vegas that only had a few hours left, but I wanted to take advantage of the time because I produced one vid in that time. The vid was more "ohh, that's shiny, I'm going to use that and then think of a reason", while this one is a more thoughtout "because of this reason, I can use this effect to emphasize it".

I didn't realize the DON'T DO DRUGS thing until after I was finished. Watching it the first time, I thought, "omg, I'm never doing drugs." I was going for the "Shane is hot mess" angle and she's high and/or drunk the whole episode, so the drug thing was an unintentional added layer.

Thinking about it, your "Volcano" vid was the first one of your I ever watched... So pretty...

The Shane in 4x01 is so different from the Shane I watched in 4x07 last night. I'm pleasantly surprised at what they are doing with her character and still making it believable to me. (P.S. how cute is Shay?)

Only use one episode, previouslies included
Every clip must have some sort of effect on it
Do something different with the audio that I've never done before
Complete in under a day
...I can't remember the 5th, but it will come to me...

I feel exactly the same. It's such a cliched plot device, bringing in a kid, and yet it feels authentic and I pretty much love seeing the effects on Shane. The kid playing Shay has the most freakin' GORGEOUS eyes! And dude, now I fear for heartbreak, after the most recent ep :( Ah, well.

When he had his black eye, noticed how cute his eyes were. I felt terrible at the end of the episode. Look at what she was about to do. That's a huge step and then it's pretty much pulled out from under her. Eric Roberts is on my tv all the time now.

When the storyline started I worried about where they were going seeing as the only storylines I like right now are Max and Shane. It seems like most of the other characters aren't themselves anymore. It's not believable or interesting.

Oh my god.

That was starkly powerful and haunting and... raw. I could feel it, you know? And I've never seen a single episode of The L Word.

It was so plugged into what the character was feeling that it was... well, disturbing is probably the best word I can come up with. But in a way that's so profound it has its own kind of beautiful perfection to it.

I love the contrast in the muted colors and blown-out yellow/red. Really sets the perfect mood. Throughout, you have this incredibly evocative way of using masks, repeated clips, breaks in flow, sudden external motion, *chilling* closeups, and cutting away and back to a scene... that creates a sense of disorientation and despair while just layering on the mood of the narrative.

Need a while to digest it, cause... WOW. After a few views I'd have to say it's among the most powerful videos I've ever seen, period.
