lyrics:
You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler,
The gambler,
The back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

Well my goodness gracious let me tell you the news
My head's been wet with the midnight dew
I've been down on bended knee
Talkin' to the man from Galilee
He spoke to me in the voice so sweet
I thought I heard the shuffle of angel's feet
He called my name and my heart stood still
When he said, "John go do My will!"

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler,
The gambler,
The back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

Well you may throw your rock and hide your hand
Workin' in the dark against your fellow man
But as sure as God made black and white
What's done in the dark will be brought to the light

You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler,
The gambler,
The back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut you down

Notes:
I used DJ Schmolli’s mash-up of the vocals of Johnny Cash's God's Gonna Cut You Down, the drums on Led Zeppelin's When The Levee Breaks, the Beastie Boys’ bass from Sabotage, the guitar from Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever, and The Beatles’ lead guitar from Come Together. It’s some seriously amazing work. I downloaded it from MashupTown and I highly recommend it.

After having used Windows Movie Maker for so long and then seeing all the cool things I could do with Vegas without having to write xml was amazing. I fiddled around with it for the 30 days trial and produced this, which I will chalk up to experience and learning. I first got the idea for the vid back in December when it was posted on MashupTown, but then Johnny Cash’s original God’s Gonna Cut You Down was used for a promo for the show, I decided not to make the vid, but then I got a few kicks in the pants and did it anyways.

Oh man, I loved that! The timing was excellent, but I really, really liked it as a whole, watching John pass his legacy and guilt down to Dean, whether he wants to or not. Just awesome all around.

Thanks for the lovely feedback. As I read the comments I continually amazed that viewers were able to pick up on "John pass his legacy and guilt down to Dean, whether he wants to or not."

This is amazing! I had such fun watching it and I can tell you had fun making it too. LOVED the audio-synced effects. Thematically it also felt very strong and I liked the fact that it came from Dean's POV. There's a real sense of inevitability with the whole legacy thing.

I had SO much fun playing with everything. I actually said, "ohh, shiny" quite a few times and I went over board with all the fun. :) To me, a lot of what we know about John was filtered through the boys. We mostly got glimpses of what John was like early in the first season with the flashbacks and characters talking, but we didn't get him as a full character present on screen until toward the end of the first season when he was so built up.

Yay, so glad you picked up the inevitablilty thing. :)

I really like what you've done with this kiki, the experimentation works. The song is perfect, thanks for giving a link to feed my new mashup addiction by the way. I think you really captured the essence of John, his mission and his fatalism and the way they are passed on to Dean.

Great vid.

I was just wondering if you'd posted your vid at [livejournal.com profile] supernaturalvid? If you haven't you should! *g*

Not yet. I was going to yesterday, but real life really put a kink in my online plans. I uploaded it to imeem and youtube and before I got to post it, I got called into work early. When I came home I was tired as all get out (and I burned my arm), so I posted on my own journal and went to bed. I had classes starting at 8am today, so now I'm going to pimp it around like it's my ten cent whore.

Thank you. After I finished and watched I thought the experimention would only work for me.

MashupTown is where I get about 30% of my mashup tracks from. They have a great selection. If you want to feed your addiction even more, go through the archives and prepare to listen until your eyes bleed.

When I make I vid I always second guess if my meaning will come across, so I'm delighted you got that. :)

Really well done. The song is a perfect fit and I liked the effects you used in the begining to match the music. Also I really liked the scene with the lyrics 'John go do my will' and it's John talking to Dean. Awesome.

Thanks. I'm seriously in love the song and I'm glad you thought the effects worked. I was a little effects happy because it was the first time I'd seen so many shiny effects. :)

I wanted to stay away from being too literal with the lyrics. And I wanted to emphasize the Dean and John role aspect. :)

That is me, kiki_miserychic, I just don't want to log in at my college library right now because I am too lazy.

I always have a good time watching to see how you're going to bend the source to your vision. :D Thought the creapy noise scanning effect was a great fit for the show and you did some very cool things with the added motion and timing.

That's high praise coming from an awesome vidder like you. I was enamored with the added motion because it's so easy to do with Vegas as opposed to Windows Movie Maker.

Wow. So this was awesome, and I don't even watch the show (all though I have seen the 1st eppy). LOVE the transition you used for all the guitar bits and of course the wonderful timing on the fireball at 1:42. That was snappy. Excellent!

So you made this in Vegas? Did you get that transition from Vegas too? I'm always looking for new discoveries in that program. ;)

When I first thought of doing the vid, the fireball part was the first thing I knew I wanted to do with the section.

Yep, made in Vegas. It's under transitions > cross effect > cross zoom a only. And depending that the clip order, I sometimes used cross zoom b only. Also, yay for another Vegas user. I'm very in love with it right now.

Wait, that crazy awesome filmy effect is a crosszoom and that's it? O.o

No, not that, oops. The distortion one is Video FX > TV Simulator > Bad Sync, then I just messed with all the levels.

"Experimental" in a very good way! It's a great mashup, so driving and inexorable, like the topic. And the effects work with the song...love the wavy scan distortion on the riffs, but also the bouncy, beat-driven pans.

As a side note, you said you hesitated on the song because it was used in the promo...having just gotten caught up on the show and starting to think about vidding it, that's a real issue with Supernatural! They use so much music as a part of the show that I think it makes song selection for vidding very sticky. And I really think you made a good choice here.

Thank you. I want to make sweet sweet love with the mashup. At first I wasn't going to put in as much of the distortion, but I figured that it's my first time with all the cool effects, so why not go all out with it?

With Supernatural, more so than most fandoms, the music selection is difficult and has to be delicate because within the show they set up the soundtrack. There's very good vids that deviate from the show's guidlines too.

One question: Why can't I be you?? WHY???

This is just... it defies description. It's experimental and crazy with the insanity, yet so very precise and perfect in its own way. It's... just beautiful.

I adore the emotion, the affected staticky transitions, the motion... but the thing that really sticks out for me is your amazing sense of pace. It plunges forward, and then suddenly stops and lingers on a scene, then plunges forward. It's just breathtaking.

Your work is so organic and full of a sense of life I don't see in other vids. I vid. This isn't vidding. You do something with which I'm unfamiliar. It's beyond.

Wow.

Are you kidding? After "Living Dead Girl", I want to go all Sylar from "Heroes" and take your superpower of vidding out of your brain and put in mine.

I'm glad you like the experimentalness of it. :) Wee!
