Watch me soar

I saw Serenity Saturday.
Holy mother of god.
I cannot believe it. First, they killed Book and Wash. I can’t believe that. Both of them. I didn’t think they’d kill two of the cast off in one movie. I cried like a bitch in the theater. That’s right. Everyone in the theater was laughing from his repeat of “I’m a leaf on the wind...”, then he got impaled with the giant stake splinter thing and everyone did a horrified gasp double take reaction. Zoe absolutely killed me with her telling Wash that he had to get up and her saying “he ain’t coming”, then going badass and beating the shit out of a Reaver. At the burial I got weepy again because of Zoe in her glorious dress. I think she’s pregnant because that would be just the kicker. I actually have an abandoned future fic I started for [Bad username or site: ”serenitysummer“ @ livejournal.com] where Zoe and Wash had gotten pregnant, but Wash had died, but I seeing the movie makes me want to go back to it and tinker a little bit.
The unfocused shot on Zoe saying, “you want to leave this room” and then focusing on her was so fucking sweet.
I thought Kaylee and Simon were going to do it right there while the Reavers came in. I sympathized with Kaylee and the need for some sex. Maybe not while crazy monster are trying to kill you.
I honestly thought they were all going to die. Simon got shot and I totally thought Joss was going to kill half the crew. Poor Simon. He was shot and he still wanted to help. I thought he was going to ask River to get his bag, which would come full circle from Mal taking River on a job and Simon not wanting her to go. I thought it was going to be him realizing that River isn’t always helpless and asking her to help him, but then I realized that he didn’t need to because River was ready to run.
I love Jayne and his arms, but you ass, you were going to shoot River! I thought he learned his lesson about that in “Ariel”. Hello, Mal was going to space you. It was great that when they were crashing, he still went around and checked everyone before he buckled himself in.
I thought that Simon paid people to get River out and then he collected her in a box, but in the movie it showed him in on the breakout. I’m going to watch the pilot again, but I swear that’s how he put it. Maybe he lied to them in the pilot, but why? I can see why he lied about her being a weapon, but him going in and getting her would have held more weight with the crew, but then they would have been more weary of him because he was able to get her out of Alliance hands. Either way it shows the great lengths that he would go for her.
I adored Mal in this. Nathan Fillion’s face is so pretty and pained looking. He really sells the conflict. I’m so glad they didn’t rush into getting Mal and Inara together or anything beyond civil and friendly. Mal himself was much more dark in the movie than in the series, which felt right. Him shirtless is always a plus, especially with scars and bed head. The nerve thing was brilliant.
They went more toward the Chinese than the Western look. Especially with Simon’s wardrobe. I kinda missed the vests.
Blue Sun. Everywhere.
The set was different in little ways like missing railings and higher stairs, not to mention new areas. We were barely in the engine room and I can only remember a shot of the infirmary through a window.
Half the cast got skinnier.
I liked Book, but he wasn’t essential to the plot and I like that they left some mystery, even though I supposed his back story is parallel to that of the operative guy. Hmm, there’s still Inara’s secret past. He wasn’t in it all that much and I remember him from the previews either. He still has scary hair. His death scene was good. I always thought he was preachy, which for a preacher is par for the course, but his dying worked for me. Except for the annoyance of varying blood on the side of Mal’s face.
I can’t believe that they turned Serenity into a Reaver ship. It was a cool idea, but it was wrong and made me sad because it was like raping Serenity.
OMG, the Reavers. I’m still blown away by it. I thought that was just one of the secrets that River found out from the “key politicians”, but then they said that it was the whole reason why the Alliance was after River. I thought they were after her because of her being a weapon. The planet Miranda was interesting and later I might expound on how getting rid of aggression and general badness will not make humanity better.
I thought River was slightly less crazy than usual. She made a lot less off the wall comments that made sense later, like when the Reaver was in the cargo bay and she said that they never lay down.
The movie itself felt a little like a retelling of relationships and character development. The way Mal and Simon fought, Jayne’s betrayal, River’s outsider status reverted and then continued. Who doesn’t love Mal and Simon fighting?
I felt dumb because at the end it almost felt like Mal was going to ask the assassin guy to join the crew, then he said if he saw him again he was going to kill him.
The Simon and Kaylee sex was cute, especially with River. Check out Sean Maher’s back muscles. Another example why they call him “The Bod”.
I like that River is flying the ship with Mal now. [All hail the Mal/River] And Wash’s dinosaurs on the “dashboard” killed me. I don’t see Mal letting her do it all the time because, hello, crazy, but now she’s a part of the crew even more so than in “Objects in Space”
When it comes out on DVD I might come back with in depth thoughts about how it was all about how belief, not always religion, makes a person stronger, even if it’s belief in bullshit, then when that belief is taken away and it becomes a question of which way to go. Whatever, I believe my own bullshit.
Joss and Quentin Tarantino are such foot fetishists.

Date: 2005-10-07 07:42 pm (UTC)If you see Mr Whedon, tell him I'd like my breath back. I've been buzzing ever since. I sadly found out the spoilers before I saw the movie but it still had a huge impact on me. Wash!!! I can't believe it.
