My favorite video this year (of my own)
This year was the year of my vidding emo, which went beyond ridiculous. Ask
beccatoria, anyone else on the Cylon Internet, The IC, and
kuwdora. Once I let go of some of my baggage I was able to make that brøken day, which is possibly my favorite vid I've ever made.
Least favorite
For once I don't hate everything I've made this year. I tend to want to strangle my vids with their umbilical cord when I've finished them, but this year I took an IDGAF approach and I'm at peace with everything I made. Having to decide, I'd go with Betterman because I can see easier and better ways to do what I did. I'm in love with still images and overlays and I used the vid as a sandbox to tinker with underneath the intentions of the vid itself. I like the product, but it has rough edges that I don't like. The flaws are parts of vids I'm drawn to and these were intentional for The Doctor's POV, but I did it the hard way technically.
Most successful
In terms of sheer number of people watching, I'm on a Boat, no contest. It has about 50,000 views on my youtube account, which doesn't include all the views on the ones that people ripped and uploaded as their own other places.
My stepbrother e-mailed me a link to I'm on a Boat, saying that he knew I liked the movie and thought I'd like the video. I was torn between keeping my mouth shut and jumping up and down and shouting that I made it. Obviously, self-preservation won out and I told him it was a cool video.
Video most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion
I don't like saying that something is under-appreciated because it makes me sound whiny, which I sound like too often. so say we all ii (It's All Part of a Bigger Plan) got a good reception, but as much as I thought. I think it comes down to me having much too lofty ideas that I don't get across. I've accepted that now, but not then. I try to keep in mind that doing what I want to do in a vid is inversely proportional to how much apprecation the vid recieves online. Doing what I want outweighs my ego's sick desire for praise.
Most fun video
I'd say Right Round because I had so much fun playing with the 3D and it angst-free. I got a headache trying to edit with the 3D glasses on, then I took them off, put them back on, and realized that my 3D editing only worked at a certain angle, but it was still fun.
Video with single sexiest moment
Keira Knightly killing bitches with her sword in Devil Said is HAWT AS HALE.
Biggest vid fail
I emo-ed so much that I wrote a self-indulgent essay on "Vidding as Art" and was going to post it online. The post-VVC stuff happened and I knew it was a bad time to post, so I held it. I'm still holding it and I don't think there will ever be a good time to release it.
Hardest video to make
Technical issues during Between the Bars made me want to stab something. I also had narrative issues and other issues around the vid. I finally went with what I was happy with, but it was a difficult process.
Most unintentionally *telling* video
I can't really decide on this one because Fiddle and the Drum is telling on a personal level and Bale Out Christian Bale Remix is telling on a fannish level.
I've connected to John Sheppard of Stargate: Atlantis (or at least the one I have fashioned in my head) more than most in fandom, who despise him a bit. I still think the majority of awful things that happen in the Pegasus Galaxy are his fault, but he's a character that's disturbingly close to my own personality. I could replace him with myself in Fiddle and the Drum and it'd be a fairly accurate portrayal of how fucked up I can be.
Things I've learned
I learned a lot more about the technical side of things this year. I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable as I should be, but I've been asking more questions instead of dropping it and doing something different. I seems like this year was fraught with technical problems for me, like every year, but this year I would make a post about it and people would take pity on me and help. Last year I pretty much stumbled my way through with sausage fingers, but I asked for help this year and I'm all the better for it.
I've also learned personal things and some rather mean things that I won't type out for fear of being smited.
Things to work on
I have a super amazing awesome collaboration going that I want to complete, but I had so many issues with the source that I couldn't work on it without getting pissed off at the tv show. For 2010 I want to focus on finishing vid ideas I've had for a long time. I have vid ideas I've had for YEARS. YEARS!
Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this upcoming year
Oh so many. I have a couple Supernatural vids that the show has given me the source I need to complete, but they fell like large projects. I don't want to start something time consuming because I'm starting a new job on the 4th and I'm not sure how much free time I'm going to have after teaching and other real life things.
If I can work on my collaboration this year, I'll be a happy camper. I'm excited about the collaboration aspect and it's been stewing for a while.
Second to lastly, I'm adding coolest thing that happened to me vidding-wise
The BAMF
bradcpu has started creating monthly vidder profiles featuring an audio interview with the vidder over excerpts from his or her vids. I was the August Vidder Profile. I discussed my frequent use of sexual or violent source material, my take on vidding as an art form, my concepts, my influences and more.
And in addition:
If there is any question you would like to ask me about any one of my vids, then go ahead! What I meant by a particular clip or sequence, why I chose to highlight that characterization, why I chose that song, what crack I was taking and where you can get some...anything. Anything you might like to know about how I made a vid, I shall do my best to answer.

Me too! I'm surprised they haven't died from lack of vidding skills or attention in all this time but they hang on, poor vid baby ideas.
I'd like to see your essay. But I understand if you feel it's not the right time.
I have to find a time to watch your Dollhouse vids!

Date: 2010-01-01 10:07 pm (UTC)I want to pass off some of my vid ideas to vidders that can actually make them and dohem justice.
My essay is a mess and I still need to do another draft one day, but I'll send it after that. :)
I have more Dollhouse vid ideas too. I want to wait for the show to end so I can have every possible clip for my Melvemberline vid and my Sierra vid. It will be like a triptych.

Date: 2010-01-01 11:08 pm (UTC)I totally understand not wanting to go public, but, would you consider an email exchange? IM? I so want to talk about this!
Not that this post is all about me. (: You made some FANTASTIC stuff this year. Just gorgeous work, always remaining true to your vision and breaking the mold wide open, as usual. You rock, is what I'm saying.

Date: 2010-01-01 11:39 pm (UTC)And for the record, that broken day is in my top five vids of the year, for sure! And maybe ever, if I kept track of that sort of thing. <3
I try to keep in mind that doing what I want to do in a vid is inversely proportional to how much apprecation the vid recieves online.
Ah that kind of sucks for you. I think you are too smart for your audience! FWIW sometimes I find I just don't know what to say about some of your vids. Which is kind of a lame excuse, but true. They're so visually chewy that they don't translate to words easily and I'm not very good at just commenting with my personal response to something and having my silly thoughts just, like, be all out there. But I'm getting better!
Put me on the list of people who think that essay would be fascinating, even though I understand that sometimes you just don't want to make those things public. I perpetually feel like I lack the language and the POV to say what I mean about things like "vidding as art" and end up saying it all wrong. So I'd love to read your thoughts sometime!

Date: 2010-01-02 01:00 am (UTC)My ideas are too lofty and I forget that other people don't think the same way I do. I'm too opaque when I vid, not too smart. :) I'm mainly concerned with the visuals over the meaning.
I will always want to know your thoughts. Even the dirty ones.
I didn't think so many people would be interested in the essay, dang. Maybe I will get the notion to fix it up proper and post it.

Date: 2010-01-02 12:23 am (UTC)That's amazing that your step-bro sent you your own vid! HEE!
That Broken Day and Waters of Mars both give me total body shivers, dude. <# And if the vidding art essay is the one I think you're talking about you really should post it dude, it was good.
Also I will always, always love so say we all ii(it's all part of a bigger plan)! Also I'm not sure I ever let you know but I love your Merlin vids and how you use the other footage to frame the story as prophetic dreams about future, past and otherlives.
Keep on rocking, dude, and never change how you vid!

Date: 2010-01-02 01:03 am (UTC)The essay is the one where I was a flail-y art snob. I think I sent it to you and the rest of the Cylon Internet. I know Julie saw it, deathisyourart, and crickets for sure. It was during a time when I was disillusioned with vidding and was doing everything but actual vidding.
