vid title: Choose Life.
music: Transpotting monologue (Ewan McGregor, Irvine Welsh, John Hodge, and Danny Boyle) with Lust for Life (Iggy Pop).
source: Supernatural
duration: 1:03
notes: Created for Vividcon 2009's challenge show, IDIC.

summary: What life will Dean choose?

notes added:I don't like having to expand on my vids unless I want to do so, but I feel like I have to explain my reasoning for making this vid for the challenges vidshow. The theme used for the challenge, as always, is left open to interpretation.

Simply, the Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations aspect is the different possible lives Dean has been shown within the series.

Not as simply, the theme was "IDIC," which I researched and found the concept to be a joke. The first thing I read put me off doing a challenge at all because of falseness of it, but I went a different direction than expected because I couldn't get behind the concept. Within the show it's a prestigious Vulcan award of merit, celebrating the vast array of variables in the universe – the sea of possibility that a Vulcan-trained mind can navigate. In the real world it's a cheap ploy to sell replica merchandise to fans that the actors wanted nothing to do with. The challenge was kind of hollow for me. I decided to go with how the Vulcans went from violent wars to generally adhering to a philosophy of non-violence. The vid explores if Dean would trade his violent life for a more peaceful one, which is a lie.

This was absolutely fantastic, I love Danny Boyle's works and I loved your end shot here.

Danny Boyle has sone some really solid work over time. He's extremely talented.

Thanks!

I love the cutting in this and the spot-on, tongue in cheek lyric interpretations. I'm really looking forward to hearing more about the reactions and interpretations because I think this is deliciously ambiguous. It's making me thinky about SPN.

Thank you. I had fun putting the clips to certain words. I have no idea how it went over or if people got what I was going for.

Mmmm, thinky about SPN...

I like the edge on this, the way the final shot recontextualises, to an extent, everything that came before, because--why *would* Dean choose the way he would?

Very neat!

Thanks. Dean has onion-y layers. :)

I feel that this is deeply awesome but I need to watch it a few more times to fully appreciate.

I love the song choice--its cheekiness fits Dean well, and I'm really impressed with the way you've vidded the spoken word in both this vid and your Dollhouse one.

Very cool! I look forward to parsing it more on my rewatches.

:)

This year most of my vids weren't to something that started out as music. It's funny how that worked out. I wish there were more vids to spoken word. It's extremely interesting to edit video to.

Oh, I love the way you've matched clips to the lyrics, particularly: career, wondering who the fuck you are, friends... actually, all of them were spot on. The angel-touch was a great framing mechanism too.

Thank you. I had a lot of fun working out what I wanted and where. I started the vid before the last season was over, so I was pleased when the angel forehead touch moment showed up again.

I love, LOVE this. What struck me on first watch was how well it epitomizes Dean's self-loathing (the irony of Lust for Life). Then I realized you were using the alternative realities about halfway through the vid and flailed all over the place.

Dean's face on "wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning" kills me. Not!Sam on "choose your future" gives me chills.

Awesome, AWESOME ending.

P.S. Rennie!!!!!

P.S.S. This has been the VVC vid that has most consumed me this year, which is not surprising since last year it was your I Want You (So Bad).

Thanks bunches for the feedback!

The Sunday morning part was the first thing I laid down in the timeline. I'm noticing that lately the first part I edit ends up being people's favorite part. :)

Hopefully I can make something next year that consumes you too!

it's scary how well that monologue seems to fit with dean/spn here & the ending is just... completely awesome & slightly chilling.

Thanks. :) I love taking monologues and applying them to other sources. It's like a crossover, but not entirely. It makes all sorts of implications.

I'm kinda running out of thinky thoughts, so lemme just say that this was just as cool, if not cooler the second time around. I love the cheekiness and all rapid-fire cuts, and I especially love how you tie in the beginning with Castiel doing that forehead thing with Dean, then end where Zachariah does a similar thing. So cool. :D

No requirement of thinky thoughts. :) I had a sheet I printed off the lyrics where I scribbled bunches of notes on clips. Nice to know they worked for you.
