ETA: Fixed.

My aspect ratio is coming out wonky and I have no clue how to fix it. My source is 720x400:

but when I render it from Vegas as DV Widescreen and the dimensions 720x400 it looks like this:

I tried rendering as DV with the dimensions set to 720x400, but it looks like this:

I also tried DV and DV Widescreen under 720x480, but the come out with the letterboxing at the top and bottom.

Does anyone have thoughts as to how I'm made of FAIL when it comes to rendering? Or a way to fix it?

(I'm going to cross post to comms later if no one on my flist can help.)

ETA: Fixed.

I'll have to check my render specs when I get home but I have always had an issue with vegas and ended up cropping each clip itself to take out the letterboxing. I'm probably doing it wrong, ping Dayln (gigglemonster) in PM here or at her Twitter and see if she has any answers. I know she's a vegas expert practically. If not I'll give her a look when I get home. GOD I haven't vidded in so long. These kinds of answers should be 2nd nature right? Sheesh.

EDIT: I can't believe I didn't comment on the pretty source! I have no idea what that is btw!

Thanks. It seems like Vegas gives me issues every time I render. *kicks it* I'll probably hit her up tomorrow. :)

It's from The Fall. it is the prettiest movie EVER made.

I don't know Vegas, so I can't really make much of a guess, other than possibly the pixel-ratio is skewed? Should be 1.0 when it's set to 0.9 or vice versa?

Other than that, all I have is yay, The Fall vid!

That's one of othse settings I've never changed from the defaults. :) Thank you, I'll play with it some more and see if that's it.

ETA: I tried all the combinations I could and it still comes out stretched. That could be the problem, but with something else too.

If you export the file as a UNCOMPRESSED avi out of Vegas & then run that through Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK) then it shouldl automatically crop the black bars for you in the encode process.

Thank you, thank you.

I rendered a small section and ran it through AutoGK, but it's keeping the bars and coming out stretched:

Is there a setting I might have messed with that is keeping the black bars? I only started using AutoGK in the last few months, so I could have screwed up the defaults.

As soon as I posted, I realized your footage was still squashed - doh!

As I master out of my NLE as a DVD (ie VOB files) it may fare better with chopping the black bars off.

The only other thing I can suggest is to take that UNCOMPRESSED AVI & run it through Virtual dub mod. Go to Video->Filters & "Add" a Sharpen one.

Leave the slider on zero & then the Cropping Button will become clickable. Go into it & crop off the black bars from top & bottom.

Then "Add" a Resize filter - if your original source is set to 700x400 without any black bars, then make this the new resolution of your AVI.

Once done click OK & save the uncompressed AVI to a new uncompressed AVI (no quality loss). Hopefully this will bring the aspect ration back to its original - though there may bechance that there will be some visual "blockyness"

Failing that, ask the question in vidding tech - if you haven't already done so. Im not too familiar with Vegas & the method I describe above involves a fair bit of fucking around, & you don't want to have to do that everytime...

Wow, you are like a vidding white rabbit. I don't want to know how far the rabbit hole goes, Neo. :) If this is the level of stuff you know about programs you don't use, then DAMN.

Thank you so very much. That works, but the "blockyness" you mentioned is extreme. It's for CVV and it would be very apparent when big. I'll post to vidding tech tomorrow and see if there's a way to make is less "blocky".

P.S. Lily Allen replies icon-style to Neo. :)

Just as I feared - the blocky-ness reared its ugly head. As to be expected with resizing something beyond its original resolution that way.

I know I could probably suss it out if I was sitting at your PC through trial & error in Vegas itself, but yes your best bet is to ask someone who uses it.

That's what I'm doing now. I'm trying a bunch of different combinations and rendering out the same 3 seconds to test it out. I'm getting pretty close to figuring it out! WEEEEEE!

Glad you got some use out of it kiki.

Hey!
So, I'm not sure if this is really your problem or not but what I usually do with aspect ratio, is like what KC said. I crop each clip itself. I right click, go to 'event pan/crop' and then on the left hand side panel under 'source' i choose no for 'maintain aspect ratio'. Then when I render it I would just set the size to 720x400.
So, yeah you could try that and hopefully it'll help. If not then I'm sorry, I'm not sure I really know how to fix that problem. But good luck!

ps. I can't wait to see this vid! I can just imagine how beautiful it's going to be! :)

Thank you. That will be helpful for vids in the future. Lee Pace will not cooperate and be the right aspect ratio.

You have to wait until August to see it.

Hmm, Weird. You certainly got some intense advice that will probably help you more than this. But I've followed this tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YugKIHi7zq8) to get a nice uncompressed render and then run it through AutoGK. It's what I've been using lately so it works. Maybe it'll help. Also OMG I bet this vid is gorgeous.

Thank you for the link, I'm testing it right now. I got out glowsticks and danced to the video's music first. :)

The movie, The Fall, is GORGEOUS.

Haha. I love the part when he's all, "Ugh. Computer so slow." Heh.

Oh man I know. I saw The Fall twice in the theater. I can't believe such beauty was actually locations and not CGI.

That part was cute.

Ohhh, isn't it beautiful? I still can't believe there's no CGI in it. Not even when the butterfly fades into Butterfly Island.

It's INSANE! I've had to pull Tarsem's reel for work and I made little squeeky fangirly noises. No one knew what I was on about. I was all, "But The Fall! Most underrated film of 2008!"

The Fall is tragically underrated. Tarsem too. The Cell is still sickly awesome. And hi-larious to me.
