vid title: Soap in a Bathtub
music: Stoney
source: the L word
duration: 4:30
summary: Shane character study for season 5.
notes:I envisioned this vid as a layered piece. The first layer being the show itself, the L word, and the character of Shane. The song is asking her "isn't this what you want?" She constantly starts and stops relationships, sabotages them, and starts again. Nearly every season is the same for her. There's a woman, they get together, Shane can't commit fully, there's a freak out, and then the relationship breaks off somehow (usually cheating). Assuming it's not lazy writing, which it may be, the character continually repeats her doomed relationship because she sees the couples around her (mainly Bette and Tina) happy and in love. That's what she wants for herself, but she can't actually keep it. The second layer is my own layer. The vid is for [livejournal.com profile] charmax, who, like I said at the end of the vid, has found what most of us are still looking for, including me (and Shane).

For Charmax: May you have found what most of us are still looking for.

I only touched your love
When the tips of my fingers tried to clutch your love
I'm sick of this soap in a bathtub love
I need something to hold (ah ah)
I feel deluded
As once again I am eluded
And everything is left unconcluded
I need something to hold

And we know you're there
Somewhere in these murky waters
If you just showed us where
You'd bring to life all that you taught us
Do you just sit and stare?
I know that you're longing to be found

Isn't that what you want?
Isn't that what you want?

I adore your love
But it's snakes and ladders looking for your love
Fakes and blaggers claim to be your love
I don't want the fools gold (ah ah)
But I'm in in danger
I'm hungry, angry, lonely, and a stranger
I'm livin' la vida loca lone ranger
I need you to take home

And we know you're there
Somewhere in these murky waters
If you just showed us where
You'd bring to life all that you taught us
Do you just sit and stare?
I know that you're longing to be found

Isn't that what you want?
Isn't that what you want?

And we know you're there
Somewhere in these murky waters
If you just showed us where
You'd bring to life all that you taught us
Do you just sit and stare?
Well, I know that you're longing to be found

Isn't that what you want?
Isn't that what you want?

Ooooh, I love it. I haven't seen a good chunk of this season, but I can still see all the patterns that Shane has built over the seasons--her push/pull cycle of intimacy and self-destruction. The things she wants but doesn't let herself have!

Great job :)

Thanks. Shane is one of my favorite characters. She sabotages herself constantly.

Lovely! Emotionally and visually. :D Loved the push and pull in both the storyline and the rhythm of your cutting/use of motion.

Thanks. I wanted to work on something slower and more emotional.

Oh, this is wonderful! I haven't even seen the L-Word since season 1 (reason 3,723 they could throw me out of the lesbian club ;) ), but I love Shane anyway, and you told her story wonderfully here. I loved the jump cuts speeding up to unevitable endings.

This vid made me well up, actually, despite not knowing the specifics of the story it was telling. It spoke directly to my own vexed/longing/onlooking/unattainable relationship to the couple form. So, great job on the emotion. :)

Thank you.

I will watch the L word no matter how awful it becomes. And it's pretty bad. I love vidding Shane. She's so fucked up that there's always somewhere interesting to go. Shane is the character on the show that I relate to the most, so I get the feeling.

Wow that was kinda powerful, kiki! Don't follow the show, but your intent was loud & clear. The song definately seems to suit the character & your editing re-enforces it tenfold. You really matched the intesnity of the songs edgier moments & then captured the emotion of the slower sections.

I genuinely enjoyed watching that - and solely for your editing & storytelling ability. Though the naked female forms were kinda nice benefit too...ahem.

Thank you. I'm really glad my intent got through. I pretty much screamed my theme to the point of actually writing it, so I wasn't very subtle.

Nudity is always a plus. :)

TITS!

what? I mean, this is a perfect song and story for Shane. it's not easy to vid soap opera, and you did an admirable job of making a visually and narratively compelling piece (of course, the sex scenes didn't hurt -- I'm impressed that Shane had enough sex in one season to fill up a full-length vid). I loved the sex time toggles!

it's ironic to use Shane for a wedding vid, but as you explain in your layers, also somehow the most perfect of all.

Thanks. Shane is pretty much me. In looking at the other vids on the wedding DVD, I'm the only one that actually vidded to [livejournal.com profile] charmax.

This vid is amazing! I have never watched the show but the character's charisma comes across very well despite that. I really loved the kinetic, edgy feel to the editing which conveys that sense of endless searching.

Thanks. It's not the greatest show, but I can't stop watching it. :)

I still haven't seen much past season one, and wow, apparently her character development hasn't changed much at all. I love how you've taken potentially kinda lazy writing and made it into this cyclical narrative, with bonus layers all about the commitment theme.

The Shane of season one is pretty much the Shane of season two. At least relationship-wise. It is probably lazy writing, but I can pretend it's harsh characterization of a person that can't seem to change and follows into the same pattern.
