fic recs with vid and book covers

I realized I'm terrible with words, so I started making book covers for the fics I enjoy as a form of feedback. I also made a little vidlet for one as well.

FIC RECS:

[livejournal.com profile] millylicious's The Music Box - Sylar/Claire, Nathan/Claire(ish) of Heroes. (Broken things need fixing.) -Download link for vid.

[livejournal.com profile] kuwdora's Through the Gates of Pandaemonium - Sylar/Mohinder of Heroes. (Abyssus abyssum invocat (Hell invokes Hell).)

[livejournal.com profile] dollsome's Lines - Sierra/Victor of Dollhouse. (Victor, Sierra, and crayons.)

[livejournal.com profile] raphaela667's the ups and downs of you - Kirk/Spock of the Star Trek Reboot. (Starfleet first officers did not regress to childhood without at least submitting prior warning to their commanding officers. They'd established that after the whole Pon Farr mess last year. There were rules about Vulcan biology and scaring the hell out of Jim now. This had to be in violation of at least three of them.)

[livejournal.com profile] beccatoria's The name of this story is your name. - Caprica of Battlestar Galactica. (What if Caprica didn't actually die. Ever.)

[identity profile] tearful-eye.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
woah. this is a gqmf of a post, i love this idea! i never know what to say when i rec something either, except - 'it was awesome'

& hee, i've read that trek fic, kid!spock is the cutest thing.

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, I love the term GQMF. I use it IRL. No joke.

I'm terrible at knowing how to feedback someone. I usually throw out a million adjectives.

Little Spock was so cute in that fic.

The important question is, WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD THIS VID?

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh, yeah, forgot that part. (http://www.mediafire.com/?n5ymmyzzk5w)

[identity profile] obsessive24.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
THAT SHIT IS WELL AWSM. So cool!

[identity profile] demonqueen666.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn, but that is one fine collection of awesome, that right there. I love that I can always trust your recs.

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, bb!

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2009-06-08 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
;) Thanks. I usually rec vids, but I've been wanting to branch out and rec fics too. Hopefully the level of awesome will keep up. :)

You shouldn't do experiments in vidding until you comprehend the basics. You're still putting effects on in place of content like last year.

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
I got your comment at 3am my time and I was going to wait until tomorrow to comment with a carefully worded reply saying that I welcomed all feedback in a friendly and contructive manner. Instead you're going to get what I honestly want to say, which is DIAF.

I think you commented anonymously so that I can't I have no idea where you're coming with that comment and you obviously don't want me to know because you don't want your name attached to it. Lack of content? Really? It's a 30 second vidlet I made as a thank you and rec for a friend's fic. Did you read the fic? If you want to talk about the content of the vid, then you should read the fic and tell me how the vidlet lacked content. I will use as many effects as I see fit in a vid and I do not see the need, nor have the desire, to explain my reasoning to anyone else. Unless I want to do so.

In case you forgot, DIAF.

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
OHHHHHHHHHHH, and I forgot to ask you what you think "the basics" of vidding are and why do you think making experimental vids requires me to know them? Is there an outline that's been agreed upon that contains the "rules" of vidding? I don't care about making a vid using these basics of which you speak.

Did you DIAF yet?

(Anonymous) 2009-06-09 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
I won't read the fic for the video. I don't have to because I'm interested in helping you be a vidder, not a fanfic writer. You don't comprehend vidding and you hide behind effects.

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see your opinion as entirely valid if you haven't read the fic. The vidlet is based on the fic, THEREFORE, the fic is where the content originates. How can you comment on the content of the vidlet without having read the fic?

What don't I understand about vidding? Enlighten me. Is it "the basics" of vidding? What do you think "the basics" of vidding are and why do you think making experimental vids requires me to know them? Is there an outline that's been agreed upon that contains the "rules" of vidding? I don't care about making a vid using these basics of which you speak.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-09 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have to read the fic if the video had content. Structure, storytelling, meaning, theme, and pacing are missing from your vidding. I don't think you comprehend vidding at all from your videos. The basics of vidding are the traditional techniques that you use to show your theme.

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's your opinion, but I will say that it's rude to comment anonymously on a journal about a vidlet that's based on a fic that you haven't read that's a thank you and rec to a friend. It's not in a vid post, it's in a RECS post. Who made the rule that vids have to stand alone? I based the vidlet on a fic, I don't think you can talk about lack of content until you know what the content even is. But since you don't understand that, I have to say that I don't respect your opinion on the matter. I never said that the vidlet was meant to stand on its own. It's a freaking rec for the fic and a thank you to a friend, so let's leave at that.

If you think those things are missing from my vids, then fine. I know they're not because I have themes and meanings behind all of my vids. I just don't go around screaming them from rooftops and making a big deal about the nature of my vids. If you get it, you get it. If you don't, then you don't. I'm not going to sit there and spit words at the viewer to explain what I did.

I don't care about traditional techniques. I will vid what I want to vid and I resent the implication that I don't understand vidding. I think you don't understand vidding, at least the vidding I do.

[identity profile] sinaddict.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're so interested in helping, perhaps you shouldn't hide behind anonymous commenting. If you're so knowledgeable about the basics, let's see your vids for comparison.

[identity profile] beccatoria.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Why the fuck should we believe you know anything about vidding? Link to some of your vids, and let's see what makes them so goddamn great.

"The traditional techniques you use to show your theme," by the way, doesn't answer what "the basics of vidding" are in any way. Nor do I see WHY vidding can't be experimental and encompass numerous styles, unless suddenly we're going to go around burning all visual art that fucks with form and perspective because it's "ignoring the basics".

Or saying a good trailer should mean you shouldn't have to see the movie.

But wait, I'm responding to you like you aren't some giant anonymous wanker.

It's damn clear this was a gift for a friend, not a forum for nakedly aggressive anonymous bitching. Your post here is really, really fucking rude.

Not to mention I categorically disagree with your criticisms.

[identity profile] tearful-eye.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm interested in helping you be a vidder...

WTF?

1. anonymous commenting SUCKS, it's rude & absolutely cowardly! (unless it's on a kink meme or something)
2. i don't think you're qualified to 'help' anyone to be a better vidder - your criticism has no substance WHATSOEVER & since you don't show your own work for comparison you're obviously not in any position to judge
3. wow, you sound really arrogant. diaf, yes please!

+ although you're obviously too scared to show your own stuff, i would still be interested in some of the vids YOU think are good. cause imho (and i know many agree with me here) kiki's vids are some of the best & most inspired around, and it makes me wonder what YOU like & which vidders you think have mastered the basics of vidding at all.

/rant.
(sorry about that kiki, but comments like this make fucking ANGRY)

[identity profile] milly.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The fic is not for the video, the video is for the fic. The video is like a trailer for the fic, if you want it put more simply, because apparently, you need things spelled out for you. Straight narrative has its place. Metaphor has its place. Expressionism has its place. Personally, I'd rather there be a lot more vidders like [livejournal.com profile] kiki_miserychic than your run-of-the-mill linear vidder.

Not to mention that you're a fucking joke for not even having the courage to say who you are. How can any judge the value of your opinion about vidding if you don't have anything to back it off. Be it your own vids or your opinion on other vids, I don't care. But stand for your own goddamn opinions.

(also, if you really wanted to help, you would have gone through all of her vids and seen she's perfectly able to do amazing 'normal' content-filled videos (even though for anyone with half a brain, there's an infinite amount of content to gather from her experiental vid).)

The vidlet is so lovely -- I love the book cover idea, and the whole notion of visual recs in general, because, yes, I am always reduced to "JUST GO READ IT! FLAIL FLAIL!" But the vid really stands out from the rest. Yay you!

[identity profile] bananainpyjamas.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because a vid's content flies over your head doesn't mean it isn't there. The language through which vidders convey substance varies wildly and there is no one correct method. If you want to watch a different style of vidding then make an effort to understand that vidder's language. The onus is not on the vidder to change their technique to fit your narrow vision of what makes a proper vid.

Also, anon commenting is beyond pathetic. If your intent was truly to help [livejournal.com profile] kiki_miserychic improve as a vidder rather than to get in a few vague jabs, you would sign your name to your comments and post them in a more appropriate space.

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
This is an awesome concept and I love you for it. That vidlet is fascinating!

(PS. I completely disagree with the anon above. I think there should be more experiments with vidding. I hope you don't take that person to heart.)

Also, anon posting = weak.

[identity profile] dreamrequiem.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Uh...wow. People are always so quick to insult when they can be anonymous. It's one thing to give constructive criticism or to simply leave it at someone's videos just not being your cup of tea. But to flat out insult someone's work with zero substance to your comment is...well, lame.

Kiki's videos are extremely different from my own. But even if I can't always relate to her style, I can appreciate that she HAS her own style and creates videos that are unique and in her own voice. Experimental, whether in fanvids or commercial products, has never really been "my thing" (though I've done a couple in my time). But whether it's something that I love or not, that doesn't make it any less valid as an art form. One style is not better than the other. Clearly, you simply don't understand the basic concept of "experimental art".

Kiki, you did the right thing with your DIAF approach. You can't really take people like that seriously...ugh.

I wanna know what you did in a past life to have some much insane raw talent and, at the same time, incite such corrosive and cowardly trolling that seems to be spurred by equal parts self-loathing and jealousy. Satan-worshipping? Goat-fucking?

[identity profile] obsessive24.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
"So" much, not "some" much, as clearly my fingers do my thinking for me.

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I think I'm a more visual person than written, so doing book cover recs seemed like a logical idea. Like the vidlets and book covers are my way of saying "JUST GO READ IT! FLAIL FLAIL!"

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I'm over the anonymous commenting. I do what I want!

Of course. That explains everything.

You shouldn't comment on vids until you comprehend the basics.

I won't read your comments in-depth. I don't have to because I'm interested in helping you comment, not be a troll. You don't comprehend commenting and you hide behind anonymity.

As you don't seem to be able to see the structure, storytelling, meaning, themes and very precise pacing in Kiki's vids, I recommend a remedial course in cinematography ("Avant-garde", "Experimental", "Ground-breaking", "Imaginative", recommended reading: "Cinematography: The Creative Use of Reality.").

I don't think you comprehend critique at all from your comments. The basics of critique are understanding the subject and using traditional techniques - like politeness, coherency and, you know, signing your name - to illustrate your point.

You're still putting the stupid in place of understanding.
