This is the first vid I made on my new laptop, Chuck, so it’s the first sans mouse. I finally have a DVD ripping system that works and doesn’t fall apart along the way. All my notes on this vid can be summed up, as per conversation with [livejournal.com profile] sol_se, in vidding meta LOLCAT form:

Your editing is amazing. You have such a distinctive aesthetic--it's one that really works for me.

Thanks. I've been trying some new things and experimenting with different looks.

Effing H, man. Wow. I'm in love with the editing style you went for in this video. The repetitions perfectly embody the drills and routines that are hammered into you as a soldier. You really prove this point with the rifle speech. And the music choice is again so unique. Really great work. I feel compelled to watch it over and over and over.

Thanks. A lot of the movie itself was about the routine of hydrating, having the same arguements over and over, shooting, etc. I tried not to be too heavyhanded with the rifle speech, but I don't think I did was able to be subtle with it. I've been toying with trying to understand what makes a vidder's style and this came out.

Hmm, well this is an interesting concept isn't it? I personally love it when I see a video and I can recognize the editing style. It's like how you can tell what icon maker made what batch of icons (sometimes). And your style can grow and change and it's so intriguing.

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2007-08-30 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
It's almost like a vidding fingerprint. There are a few vidders I could pick out of a line up, which is interesting. Just like with icons, I can tell which person posted an entry on my flist just by the formating.

So true. Plus the graphics that come with the vid (if that vidder makes graphics, that is) help with the identification.

You had me at "experimental."

I'm always speechless after watching one of your vids, which is no so good for the feedbacking.

A couple of specific things I do want to compliment about this one, though: I really like how, in the opening, you combine the constant pullouts with the source motion to make all of the clips flow in one direction - paying off in the doors closing, to the door opening. It's smooth, but at the same time kind of challenges your equilibrium (which kind of sums up your vids as a whole, I guess.) Also love the cutting away and coming back - like to the marching or the crosshair. Gives the vid an awesome sense of musicality. Plus the song builds so beautifully into chaos with the war scenes.

*shrine gets bigger*

Yay, I'm glad there will always be at least one viewer of my cracktastic experiments. :)

I was hoping someone would comment on the pullouts so I can ask if it was noticable that some of them were in reverse. I tried to pick out sections of the clip that would still look like normal forward motion, but I worried that it was obvious.

I tried to work out a way to go from the smaller screen into the full widescreen of the source while not being tacky and having some reasoning behind it by using the doors from the source.

I swear those soldiers wanted to march to the beat of Nine Inch Nails. I barely had to do anything to make it match.

My vidding goal is to make someone puke after they watch my vid.

[identity profile] bradcpu.livejournal.com 2007-08-30 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I had no idea those were in reverse! o_0

Gotta love starting a new segment of the vid with a door opening. Mental note: Rip that off some time. Did I just type that instead of thinking it? Never mind me. What I meant was "pay homage to that."

It's easy. All you need is just a lot of gooey entrails.

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2007-08-30 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Only some were in the reverse like him reading the book, the sex against the wall, and the girl taking her shirt off.

If you say it's to pay homage, then it's not ripping off. It doesn't count. It's like citing a source in a paper; it makes it ok. :)

My next one will have lots of Reaver guts, so maybe I will succeed in making someone puke.

Like Brad, I LOVED the pull-outs. And the repetition of the marching, and argh! The overlay at 0:54! And I just LOVE the composition of everything as he was doing those clappy push-ups (my arms get tired just looking at it), the way everything is framed super symmetrically and/or dead centre. And the vomiting-sand intercutting is just perfectly timed. And the ending! The way it builds up, but doesn't quite get that moment of release just like the movie. Wonderful!

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2007-08-31 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I wanted to get that feel of repetitiveness. The :54 overlay turned out better than I imagined.

I think my fat ass can do one cheerleader push-up and that's it.

I've never wanted someone to be able to shoot another person that much in my life.

Oh WOW! That was freakin' AMAZING! Wow. The intensity is unbelievable. I felt like I was suffocating by the end. The overlays and quick cuts...just wow. Ok, make more experimental things! *g*

(PS. lolcat = awesome. So true! *g*)

[identity profile] kiki-miserychic.livejournal.com 2007-09-02 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. Yay for lack of oxygen! I shall be making many more experimental things. Don't worry. For a while I wanted to vid, but it just wasn't happening, so I'm extremely glad I was able to produce something.

LOLCATS only tell the truth.

Hey, there. I just wanted to stop by and wish you Happy Birthday. I hope you have a lovely day!

Thanks. I just got home from work, so I plan on relaxing and having fun at my party tomorrow. :)
