vid - Special Death - Deadwood

vid title: Special Death
music: Mirah's "Special Death"
source: Deadwood
duration: 2:33
summary: Miss Joanie Stubbs
notes: Made for 2008 VVC Non-Attending Premieres
warning: Nudity and violence

download: 30mb mediafire

A terrible mistake was made
The weight would break the backs
Of ten strong horses tried to save
The castle in the fray
If you knew that I could take the pain
Inflicted at the battle
With faithful arrows you
Might get back in the saddle
But it's a special death you saved
For me, the brown-eyed daughter
Once you made it hotter
The thankless, holy praise
Is left alone. Why bother
To cast a stone in water?

This was gorgeous and painful and wonderful.

Oh Joanie, poor fucked up Joanie. What an insightful look at a complex and apparently weak character. I love the way you show her trying to protect women from danger and failing miserably for the most part. It's such a spellbinding vid.

That is just wonderful and perfect and now I want to go watch Deadwood again for like 12 days straight.

I know Deadwood from vids a little but I don't think I've seen these two characters before. Fabulous mirroring of the women aspirationally climbing the stairs at the beginning (beautifully cut) and Joanie? coming *down* the steps at the end.

I haven't seen Deadwood, but I really enjoyed this visually, and it totally worked with the music.

I missed a chunk of Non-Attending Premieres, but made it in time to see this, which made me so glad! I love that you've done such a thoughtful study of Joanie and the forces in her life that have shaped her without her consent...I enjoyed reading your vid rambles in the comments :) Despite so many horrible things in her life, she is still so incredibly loving and nurturing...a truly "good soul." She deserves that peace and comfort with Jane.

I was so surprised in Non-Attending Premieres to learn this was you. It's so different from what I'd normally expect, but that's definitely not a bad thing. It's cool to see that you have this kind of range as a vidder. This is a poignant yet dark character study (leave it to you to pull off that combination) that allowed me to connect with the narrative despite not knowing the source.

I was re-watching this the other day and noticed what you did with the stairs for the first time. That was just beautiful. And I love the shifts in music and color for the section with Jane.
