I'm working on some projects and I realized I didn't have a good understanding on what parts there are to the vidding process. Obviously every vidder has their own process, but I wanted to try and put a list together with all the different aspects. I asked on twitter last night and got a lot of great answers and wanted to ask here as well. Please let me know if there are possible aspects of vidding to add or elaborate on.

Vidding Process Terms (incomplete and perhaps needs reordered)

Rewatching source
Planning (storyboarding, outlining, notetaking, in timeline notes, song lyric notes, etc.)
Researching (googling, listening to podcasts, reading meta/analysis, etc.)
Converting files
Audio (finding and/or listening)
Editing (and creating)
Socializing and/or seeking validation
Technical tinkering
Rendering or exporting
Formatting release (writing posts, adding links, subtitling, and/or writing meta, etc.)

Procrastinating!!!!!! The most important part of my process.

Sometimes creating new media to use in the vid -- audio or filming or screencaptures, etc.

Does freaking out fall under "Socializing" or "Seeking validation"? ;)

Also, does "Audio" cover listening to 30 different options and then cycling back to the first or second one? Just me, then.

Cool! I'm glad you asked here since I've been off twitter for a while now.

I'd add story-boarding, which goes under planning but which might deserve its own thing. Ways I have story-boarded include printing song lyrics and writing notes alongside (I don't do that anymore) and putting notes/comments in different sections of the vid timeline itself. Once I did that by putting text on the video itself noting what went in different sections, then I exported the video and sent it to a friend for cheerleading/validation, but usually I just put an extended marker on the timeline.

The other one is prettifying the final release, because I vid old shit. So when I remember (I often don't) I put the final huge export through JES video cleaner before formatting it for upload/con/whatever. It substantially reduces noise and makes the characters look like gods.

Also taking notes, but this occurs during ideation, rewatching, planning, and clipping -- it's not really it's own separate step in the process? Still, I remember a few years ago in an end of year vidding meme you talked about having a vidding notebook. I took that up and it has been so useful to have a place to write down ideas as they randomly occur to me, especially when I can't actually get the idea on the timeline at that moment.
