vid title: Double Helix
music: Phyllis Chen
source: Fringe
duration: 2:06
Premiered in the 10th Bay Area Slash Convention (BASCon 2010).

notes: The music, Double Helix for toy piano and bowls, was composed and performed by Phyllis Chen at the Chicago World Music Festival in September 2009. She is brillant. Flat out brillant. For more visit her website.

Fringe is one of my favorite television shows and Walter is one of my favorite characters. This vid is what going mad feels like. Being in Walter's mind can be a great and terrible thing. The editing drove me toward insanity with frame by frame editing that could make someone puke, cry, and eat some red vines. [livejournal.com profile] beccatoria has a beautiful exploration vid of Walter, his character, and interactions with others with heart and soul. I strongly suggest Split Up Six Ways instead of this vid.

summary: Walter Bishop: Brillant. Passonate. Arrogant. Forgetful. Productive. Mischievous. Unfiltered. Regretful. Medicated. Fragile. Caring. Angry. Convalescent. Tortured. Heartbroken. Desperate. Reckless. Believer. Shattered. Unhinged. Devious. Loved. Scientist. Father. Friend.

Wow. This vid is like the disturbed cousin of A Bar in Amsterdam and I love it, I love it, I LOVE IT!

Srsly tho, AMAZING concept and I adore the execution. I can imagine how painful it was to edit but it's worth it, dude. I was hoping when shit got real in this vid that you'd keep coming back to the central point in Walter's mind (Peter) and you did. Really powerful, I'm not even kidding. A+++

(I identified most of the butterflies in this as either from "The Dreamscape" or from "Johari Window." Where's the last shot of the butterfly flying from?)

LOL, I never thought of it that way, but yeah.

It was a pain to render too. I had to do it in chunks like I used to do with Windows Movie Maker.

For Walter, everything comes back to Peter. Everything, which was obvious when he was shown all those pictures and he said they reminded him of Peter over and over again.

The last butterfly shot was a brief clip in one of those episodes. I can't remember which, but I remember having to frame it and crop it, so it's probably unrecognizable.

Dude, thank you for the rec - I really appreciate your views on the success of that vid, but this vid is amazing and does something important, if uncomfortable. It really is like going insane - moments of beauty in the middle of nauseous chaos. I still think the musical choice is inspired. The childlike innocence of toy piano, caught offbalance by the offkey bowls, the entire piece swaying, never quite in balance, but not winding down either. The editing style is bold and really appropriate for something experimental like this. <3

The toy piano seems so perfect for Walter because he's an adult, but childlike in so many other ways. Walter probably feels that nauseous chaos everyday, except when he looks at Peter. Or maybe more when he looks at Peter.

I think your vid makes more sense to a viewer. I love it.

except when he looks at Peter. Or maybe more when he looks at Peter.

Both, I think, which is why he's so complicated and interesting. And your vid is more experiential, and I love it. :)

I don't think I could make a vid that wasn't experimental in some way. :(

That's amazing. Creepy and disturbing and chaotic and yet with snatches of beauty or love. I particularly love the two sections towards the end focusing on Olivia (oh god the worms!) then on Peter and these things he's done to them. The juxtapositions throughout this of images that seem to be unconnected, like Olivia and the worms, are very creepily effective in evoking particular emotions.

(Also omg hai!)

The only stressful part was the rendering. It would take hours to open up the file, then it wouldn't render properly. It took DAYS upon DAYS to render it out piece by piece.

I finally got caught up enough to watch this, and it is TREMENDOUS. I love the way your cutting creates those lightning connections that the brilliant mind makes, and yet you also capture Walter's emotional intensity -- the love and guilt he feels most deeply, the denial and avoidance as the edits glance away from and back to the most painful images.

Just amazing.
