I have a rather dark reading of the movie. If Satine hadn't have died at the end, I don't think they would lived happily ever after. I think she had the right idea during this exchange:
Satine: You, you will be mean. Christian: No, I won't! Satine: And I... I'll drink all the time.
It's the same way I think Romeo and Juliet would have gotten over it if they would have waited a few weeks.
