Vidding Meme 2016 Questions and Answers )

And in addition:
If there is any question you would like to ask me about any one of my vids, then go ahead! What I meant by a particular clip or sequence, why I chose to highlight that characterization, why I chose that song, what crack I was taking and where you can get some...anything. Anything you might like to know about how I made a vid, I shall do my best to answer.

Photography meme:
Ask me to take a picture of any aspect of my life that you're interested in/curious about -- it can be anything from the house I live in to my favorite shoes. Leave your request as a comment to this entry, I'll snap the pictures and post them back here. It's like a glimpse into my world!

I did this meme 10 years ago, so it seemed fun to do it again.

Festivids - Black Widow (Practical Magic) - You should've known better than to mess with me, honey.
Festivids - Love is Blue (Life After Beth) - Boy and girl fall in love. Girl dies. What now?
Vividcon Premiere - Cut Like A Buffalo (Empire) - COOKIE.
Vividcon Challenge - Sour Cherry (The Losers) - They're fun criminals!

Total of 4 vids. The least amount of vids I've released online since I started vidding. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I started a lot of vids I didn't finish and I preferred naps & Netflix over vidding this year.

My favorite video this year (of my own)
No contest, Cut Like A Buffalo because of COOKIE. I loved planning it out, I loved editing it, everything.

Least favorite
I guess Sour Cherry only by process of elimination. I had a lot of fun making it though because I put an old abandoned vid on my timeline, copy & pasted in bits, and filled it in with text. It's only my least favorite because I like the other ones more. I'm quite proud that I thought to submit a vid that isn't really a vid at all. Like, be jealous that I thought of putting forth the least amount of effort for the most amount of return. People in the vidshow laughed way more than I thought they would. I was worried the text would be too slow, but I knew I had to account for the con setting.

Most successful
I would have to say Cut Like A Buffalo because it worked for people the way I wanted it to work. I thought the people that already love Cookie would get to see her being awesome and the people that don't know her would be interested in watching the show. I'm also pleased that no one mentioned the massive amount of reframing I did. I changed the frame on practically every clip of Cookie to make her the center focus of the frame and changed the frame to edit out men's faces and push them to the edge of the frame. So very successful for me that it's for the most part invisible to a viewer.

Video most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion
I guess Love is Blue because it's a weird little vid where a guy tries to have sex with his dead girlfriend's scarf, then she's is a zombie that has her sexual coming of age postmortem.

Video with single sexiest moment
Hmmm, I want to say the Anika and Cookie section of Cut Like A Buffalo because I cannot vid female rivarly without it becoming femslash. It's not possible. I'm not complaining though. I love it that way, but I have to say it's the section in Cut Like A Buffalo from 2:10-2:32 because it's Cookie seeing what she wants, getting it, and moving on from it. She's the one leaning in to kiss that hotass younger man, she's the one spreading her legs open, she's the one undressing him, she's the one throwing her arms out, and she's the one on top. I also think the section with Lucious is sexy too, but that relationship has too much history and issues for me to find it the sexiest part.

Biggest vid fail
I suppose there's parts of Love is Blue that I don't love. I made it to have fun and in hindsight it could be better.

Hardest video to make
Black Widow because I was plagued with technical difficulties and I was worried the recipient wouldn't like it. It filled the request, but I needed the journey in order to get to heart of vid and their sisterhood.

Most unintentionally *telling* video
Black Widow because there was a span of time where I wanted to be a witch in the 90s and so much of my fashion was inspired by that.

Things I've learned
nOtHiNg. I never learn anything, lol. I learned some new programs and ways to convert files. Learned some new journal techniques to use for vidding notes.

Things to work on
I want to keep working on exporting properly. I'm certainly better at ending up with a high quality file than I once was.

I'm continuing from previous years with "I want to try vidding female characters that do more than beat people up and make things explode while being pretty."

From last year, I still haven't made a vid where I intentionally vid for an audience, so I'll have to do that this year because I keep putting it off. Wait, I actually did vid for an audience when I made Sour Cherry. So I'll change it. I try to think about what would play well at wiscon_vidparty, but I feel like I make vids I think will work, but probably don't actually work for the audience. It's partly due to never having attended, lol.

Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this upcoming year
Finishing any vid and releasing it online is an accomplishment at this point. I want to do at least one vid for Vividcon and one for wison_vidparty.

Resolutions for 2016
I want to go to Vividcon again this year, job timeline willing. I'll suggest a vidshow I'd VJ. I'm also planning to curate a playlist for wiscon_vidparty like usual.

I have lots of works in progress in various stages of completion. Part of my lower than usual number of released vids this year is that I started a lot of vids that I haven't finished. This year I want to try something new where I write down an idea when it strikes me and have to sit on it for a while before I actually start to vid it. That might decrease the number of vids I start and then abandon when something else shiny pops into my mind.

I want to rec more vids. I do it a lot of twitter and want to do it more.

12 - ***Flawless (Disney Princesses movies (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Mulan, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Brave, and Frozen)) - We woke up like this.

13 - You are a runner & I am my father's son (Teen Wolf) - a haiku for fictional ladies: / sorry your story / was left in such clumsy hands / i will avenge you

Total of 8 vids, 5 of which are under 2 minutes and could be considered vidlets... I was really into vidlets for the "get in, do the thing, get out" aspect.

My favorite video this year (of my own)
Runs in the Family. Absolutely my favorite vid I made this year. It's the most brain to actual timeline vid thing I've produced. My brain categorized all of the source in such a way that I made it a vid. Abigail is a character close to my heart and I stan for her 100%.

Least favorite
World Spins Madly On. I had a difficult time making it. I had offered Night Watch and Day Watch for festivids, but I quickly realized I wouldn't be able to finish the vid I was working on, so I put it aside and started watching New Amsterdam to make a vid. Then I scrambled for a song. Then I had to actually vid it. The product ended up with poor pacing because I needed the song to fit the concept of being chronological, which meant the beginning was boring as FRELLING FRAK. Looking back I do enjoy parts of the vid.

Most successful
***Flawless. It was inadvertently successful. I made it for Club Vivid, but it didn't fit into the other music, so the Vividcon people offered to let me move it to Challenges. But I didn't like the idea of putting it in Challenges when I didn't make it for the themes, so I asked if I could make ***Flawless my premiere in place of Runs in the Family, which I had already submitted. It worked out that ***Flawless became my premiere and I released Runs in the Family online pre-VVC. I made ***Flawless for Club Vivid thinking people would dance to it, watch it later, and think "oh ok I get it now." It was a deeply personal experience that I translated into a vid and I didn't think anyone would care about the vid beyond myself, but I was wrong.

Video most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion
I Do Adore. Only because I didn't know how to tag it properly for the fandom to find it. It was appreciated by friends' child relative and that's all I really wanted.

Video with single sexiest moment
You are a runner & I am my father's son. The :58-1:05 section is hella sexy with the threesome dancing because that scene in the show was awesome. I'm into it even though there is so much sausage in there. Mostly because the sausages seemed equally into each other as they were into Erica. Bless those sad-eyed little puppies and their love of extended eye contact. Then it goes into Erica putting her hand on Scott and Allison's thigh in a same scene deal where Erica tries to intimidate both of them sexually. Of course Allison on top of Erica is hot in a screwed up way considering how that storyline played out. Season one was beautiful fluke.

Biggest vid fail
#timeangels. I was trying to make a fake tv promo trailer thingy and I suck at it. I'm still obsessed with the concept and execution of vid trailers.

Hardest video to make
World Spins Madly On. Because of the reasons I put in the lease favorite category above.

Most unintentionally *telling* video
***Flawless was intentionally telling, so I'll say Runs in the Family because there's some intense connections to my life that I didn't realize until I rewatched for this meme. (Isn't that always how it happens?)

Things I've learned
I learned a lot about vidders' lyrical interpretation styles for the Vividcon 2014 Lyrical Interpretation Panel with hollywoodgrrl. I ate everyone's brains and gained their knowledge.

I realized that if I edit with 1080p source, I have to export it as 1080p for it to look good. I have some major exporting regrets this year. I'm upping my technical skills slowly, but I think I'm getting better with time.

I learned that I can't speak well in public about vidding for Vividcon panels.

Things to work on
I should ask friends to "beta" by vid summaries for VVC. The one for You are a runner & I am my father's son confused people and I overestimated the audiences' awareness of the title clip where I used a blur to focus in on just Erica to set up that it was about her. With a little of Boyd.

I need to work on exporting. I have a new laptop, but I can't even get Sony Vegas installed properly on it, so I might have to give up vidding and relearn how to knit.

I'm continuing from previous years with "I want to try vidding female characters that do more than beat people up and make things explode while being pretty." I think I accomplished that with character studies of female characters that are perceived to be weak.

Last year I said "I think this year I want to try considering the audience more to stretch myself." I didn't do it on purpose, but I made an audience appreciated vid for Vividcon premieres... So I'm going to call that goal from last year accomplished and go back to my "fuck bitches; get money" frame of mind because I'm unlikely to make any vid as audience appreciated as ***Flawless.

Wait, I can't call it accomplished completely because I also said "I'd like to make one vid this year where I actually vid for an audience." I kind of did that for Wiscon, but I think I'll keep trying to make something more audience minded for Wiscon_vidparty.

Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this upcoming year
I want to do my vid idea for the Taylor Swift 1989 vid album, which I plan to be my Vidukon vid. I want to finish my festivid assignment. I want to do some Vividcon vids. I had some good ideas for Festivids that I want to keep thinking about. They were treats for friends I wanted to make, but I'm a piece of shit and know I won't be able to finish them by the deadline.

Resolutions for 2014
To finish up the questions on the Vidding Questions Meme. J left a comment that I missed, so I'll start with those, but now I want to answer them all. I noticed some comments on vids I never saw, so I'll be going back to answer those after I finish my festivid.

Again, I want to go to VVC and hope that I won't be laid off again from work. I'm going to suggest a vidshow again because I really enjoyed pulling together the Femslash vidshow this year. I'm still really pleased with it for the amazing vidders that contributed, the diversity in the sources, the different styles, and the everything of it.

I'm going to make suggestion of some vidshows I'd curate for Wiscon_vidparty again this year too. I really enjoyed curating the Dessa Playlist in 2014. I already have two possibilities in mind depending on what else I find this year. It depends on what I get for festivids too. I played the long game with my requests and asked for things I put in personal vid playlists.

I changed my vidding note style and want to keep trying new journaling styles. I found an index one I want to try out for 2015.

Continuing to look at last year's resolutions, I failed at being "more social online" in terms of vidding. My interactions are mostly on twitter, which is great aside from the 140 character limit when I'm a wordy mofo. I don't think many of my friends are still on LJ without being on twitter. I'm a terrible friend anyway.

It's after 2am and I think I need to purge myself of work in progress vids that I'm not feeling anymore. So in 2015 I want to release some WIP vids to clear them from my head because nothing kills an idea for me like showing it to people.

OMG, my resolution should be to just vid more.

And in addition:
If there is any question you would like to ask me about any one of my vids, then go ahead! What I meant by a particular clip or sequence, why I chose to highlight that characterization, why I chose that song, what crack I was taking and where you can get some...anything. kiki_miserychic: A Dinosaur and Kate Spade Shoes Fairytale (A Dinosaur and Kate Spade Shoes Fairytal)
I'm the terrible person that's posting a questions meme while I'm still working on the answers to the last one I posted. But I'm a follower and I'm jealous of everyone else getting into vidding discussions.

Total of 7 vids, 4 of which are under 2 minutes and could be considered vidlets... What's the definition of a vidlet these days? In my mind the length doesn't always equate vid vs. vidlet. Hmmm.

My favorite video this year (of my own)
When I am Laid in Earth. I was playing with connecting clips going from frame to frame. Like trying to manipulate the viewers' eyelines. Utopia is a beautifully screwy show and I think I captured a lot of that. The visuals of the show were gorgeous and I loved pulling together things within frame and moving them around. Plus, Jessica Hyde is an interesting character and I can't wait to see what happens in season two. Blood dripping from a severed down a toilet paper dispenser in a public bathroom is the most beautiful images I saw in 2013.

Least favorite
All I Need only because I feel like I could have done more to even out the visual source. I used episodes that span across seasons where the look of the show changed tremendously. The earlier seasons are dark and moody with sparse color and the recent seasons are BRIGHT AS THE SUN by comparison. I have two Supernatural vid ideas that I really, really want to do once I get the last few clips to make my points, but I do not look forward to trying to make the visual menu balanced.

Most successful
Who Needs Sleep? simply because [livejournal.com profile] elipie and some others got what I was going for, but I genuinely did not expect. I find that if I expect no one to understand what I was going for, I'm super happy when someone does get it. Lower expectations is where it's at.

Video most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion
Endure and Survive because I love zombies and I think that everyone else should too. I quite like how the black and white turned out with all the different sources. It melds perfectly with the fic storyline. I suppose not many people could thoroughly enjoy it without reading the fic, but IDGAF because I love me some zombie!AU.

Video with single sexiest moment
Après Moi. There's a moment at about 2:12-2:20 where Sarah Shahi's character, Shaw, is advancing in a series of clips, which is sexy as hell. Shaw could kill you or kiss you and you won't know until after she's done it. I am so into the Shaw and Root dynamic on Person of Interest that I'm actually writing kinky fic of them. I rarely write fic, so it's huge that I'm actually trying for sexy times.

Biggest vid fail
Enter the Circus because I didn't remember to post the signed version online until I went to do this meme. Oops. I also failed at posting recs to livejournal. I did a few on twitter and posted all of my vividcon recs to livejournal though.

Hardest video to make
Endure and Survive because the different sources were a pain for me technically. I had trouble evening out the black and white and contrast and levels for everything. I can stand back and look at it and see a few things that I didn't balance enough, but I had a deadline for the Teen Wolf Big Bang and I'm very happy with what I made. It's strange for me to say that about a vid, so I'm obviously happy with it.

Most unintentionally *telling* video
That's Life. Barefoot in the Park is one of the first non-children's movies I ever got to see. That and Silence of Lambs and Leprechaun II, but that's a different story. Movies and tv had a large influence on my development. The tv show Mad About You and Barefoot in the Park formed what I thought a romantic relationship was supposed to be along with my personal examples in my young little life. I think Jane Fonda's character, Corie, was one of the first, if not the original Manic Pixie Girlfriend. I'm amazed that I understood what was going on in the movie, which is basically a newly married couple's first fight that escalates to the point where they're "trapped" in their "apartment." Trying to look at it objectively, I think this movie is part of the reason why I go for the Paul Bratter type and the Corie Bratter type in my personal life, which makes it telling.

Things I've learned
I think I did better with the technical aspects of vidding this year (this is when compared to my previous years and not the epic awesome skills of others). I learned how to chop off the letterboxing once I've rendered my vid. I started rendering my vids uncompressed with square pixels, then putting them into virtualdub to fix the frame if needed, and popping them into autogk. I think that's working out...

I learned some more about tumblr and vidding by researching for the tumblr section of the Vividcon 2013 Infinite Diversity in Vidding Combination Panel. It's like a rabbit hole that sucked me in and gave me thousand of new thoughts and new ways to think. And continues to do so today. I absolutely love how helpful tumblr can do for organizing vid time lines. With certain vids I'm able to pull gifs into the timeline as a placeholder for actual video clips into funnel them in.

Things to work on
Last year I said, "I want to try vidding female characters that do more than beat people up and make things explode while being pretty." I think I failed partly on that, but I've expanded myself a bit more and want to continue trying. The ideas I've had for 2014 vids have evolved a bit from violent women ideas, more of a different angle on the characters I enjoy. Last year I also said, "This year I'm going to focus on making vids that have higher quality video instead of lower quality for artistic reasons that make them muddy." I think I accomplished this one for the most part. I always struggle with technical stuff, but this year was better than most for fixing those problems.

In the past I've tried to be more subdued in my vidding and I've tried to widen my window of vid ideas. I think this year I want to try considering the audience more to stretch myself. I started caring very little about what people thought about my vids, which is freeing. I'd like to make one vid this year where I actually vid for an audience. I made my festivids with this in mind, so I'm getting a head start on it.

Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this upcoming year
I considered only making vids for cons this year, but I find that to do more limiting than I want. Instead I'll say that I want to make vids for Vividcon, Wiscon, and VidUKon. Anything else on top of those is icing.

Resolutions for 2014
Again, I want to go to VVC and hope that my school doesn't have another in-service on the dates. I e-mailed by supervisor about the dates. Driving to Chicago after a day of boring meetings sucked HARD and I will not be doing that ever again. I won't know if I have a job next year for a while. I'll probably be riffed again along with the whole department, which isn't a positive outlook. I'll have to find another job, so I don't know if I'll be able to enjoy myself at VVC if I'm thinking in the back of my mind that I need to find another job.

I was made of epic fail and didn't properly send the e-mail for VVC about putting together a femslash vidshow with lots of premieres, so I'm trying again this year... maybe. I'm going to make suggestion of some vidshows I'd curate for Wiscon again this year. I really enjoyed curating the Thank Heaven for Little Girls Playlist in 2013.

I want to continue filling up my vidding journal. (I find an old one I started years ago, lost, found it, lost it again, found it, lost it, and found it again, which I need to scan pages from for [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro from last year's meme.)

I need to be more social online too. I'm so bad at that. I always feel like I'm trying to hard to be friends with people, like this:

And in addition:
If there is any question you would like to ask me about any one of my vids, then go ahead! What I meant by a particular clip or sequence, why I chose to highlight that characterization, why I chose that song, what crack I was taking and where you can get some...anything. 2. I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions. (If you want. Totally optional.)

My questions, from [livejournal.com profile] fray_adjacent12:

1. How did you get into vidding?
I started out as a viewer and then thought "hey, I could do that better" and taught myself how to vid. It's a complete rude and mean way to find a hobby. My early vids are shitty, but I had a lot of fun figuring things out, like how to write my own XMLs in Windows Movie Maker to create custom effects. Brad made an awesome vidder profile of me that I usually link people to when they ask about what got me into vidding because it explains how I wanted to vid before I actually knew there was something called vidding.

2. What vids of yours should I watch if I am squicky about gory and/or sexual violence?
There's not a lot because there's usually some level of gore, but here are some from 2009 to now. :)

3. You once mentioned that you "want to try vidding female characters that do more than beat people up and make things explode while being pretty." How is that going?
For last year I wanted to be more subdued, which I think I did. This year I wanted to change the way I decide what to vid, which is different than changing how I vid. Looking at my current timelines I've widened my window of vid ideas, but my current vid timeline (for WisCon) is my typical sort of vid for a female character. It has a different angle than usual, but it is mainly a female asskicker (Samantha Shaw on Person of Interest).

4. What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of your job?
Teaching preschool isn't easy, but I love it. And being an Intervention Specialist isn't easy, but I love it. My least favorite aspect is probably the paperwork. I'm not very organized and I'd rather be teaching than calculating percentages on IEP goals. My favorite part is everything else. When a child with autism started talking again, when a child with cerebral palsy stopped needing to use their walker, and basically when a child does anything that they couldn't before. I don't even mind when they headbutt me in the jaw or scratch my face. It sounds strange, but it doesn't faze me at all and I love it.

5. Is there a story behind your default icon, and if so, what?
I saw the photo, which is an ad for Kate Spade and it instantly felt like it captured something of myself. It's hard to explain without showing you the inside of my brain.

July
11 - I See Everything (Firefly/Serenity) - prompt (I See Everything, Firefly, River/Inara, dance)

August
18 - Long, Long Time Ago (Destino) - A surreal dance through the universe with a woman who loves a man. A man set free from stone to go after the woman carved in his heart.

19 - He Called Me Baby (Enlightened) - I feel so empty since he's been gone.

19 - Hand Covers Bruise Reprise (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) - Music without lyrics. People without faces.

20 - MoneyGrabber (Smash) - You're the one I just don't need.

21 - Dutch (Hell on Wheels) - Lily Bell, The Fair-Haired Maiden of The West

Total of 6 vids, one of which is a vidlet.

My favorite video this year (of my own)
MoneyGrabber (Smash) because it's a different vid for me. It's actually the second version because the first finished vid file was corrupted. I like how it turned out better because all the female rivalry turned into a more sexualized tension. The first version was more narratively even, but I like that Michael/Julia/Frank service as a cautionary tale in the beginning until it's time for them to go. I enjoy a good love rhombus until it's run it's track and Dev was a cheap time whore. Karen and Ivy have really good cheer sex and should role play in bed.

Least favorite
Hand Covers Bruise Reprise (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) because it did what I wanted it to do, which is make me uncomfortable when I watch it.

Most successful
I didn't really have a successful vid this year when measured in traditional terms, like number of comments. I approached vidding very differently this year and I was successful in eliciting certain things. In those terms, He Called Me Baby (Enlightened) was the most successful. Going to VVC for the first time I wanted to aim for one comment on a vid and if I got that comment, I met my goal. I wanted this one to break someone because I'm evil. I wasn't prepared for the weird looks after Challenges though, lolz.

Video most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion
I don't think any of them were "under-appreciated" simply because I made them with objectives and it doesn't bother me when people don't understand them. Until VVC I didn't fully realize how much of a minority opinion that was. If someone didn't like my vid or didn't understand it, that means it wasn't for them. I was surprised that Long, Long Time Ago (Destino) wasn't liked. I wanted to make something beautiful that I enjoyed, so I appreciate it and I overheard people saying it was beautiful, which is what I wanted.

Video with single sexiest moment
Duh, I See Everything (Firefly/Serenity) because there's actual pornography. I read up on masking tutorials and edited out The Operative. This vid was the only time it's acceptable to edit out Chiwetel Ejiofor. I played with coloring in more organic ways to match different sources. Seriously, why are people frightened by vaginas? They don't eat your soul or have teeth.

Biggest vid fail
I would say Dutch (Hell on Wheels) because I knew what I was doing wasn't going to work, but I did it anyways because I'm stubborn. I'm proud of that vidding fail though. I like it edited that way because Lily talks to fast and is the book that beat the speedreader. I love how her storyline is the more traditionally male origin story. Her husband died to give her motivation and she has visually beautiful dreams of him and his pretty eyes in fields. Hell on Wheels has flaws, but I'm well practiced in ignoring faults of a show for certain characters.

Hardest video to make
I am forever plagued with technical difficulties. ROSEBUD! I made Hand Covers Bruise Reprise (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) in Adobe Premiere 6.5 and I hate using that program for main editing. I like using it for "spices" when vidding primarily in Sony Vegas 11. I rendered that vid at least 50 times and I still think I messed it up in the end.

Most unintentionally *telling* video
Hmm, all of them have some level of personal issues that I leech into them, but He Called Me Baby (Enlightened) has a lot of emotional resonance for me in my real life. I stopped most of my emotional spewing on my livejournal, which is a good thing, but a couple of people would be able to watch the vid and see how telling it is.

Things I've learned
Last year I wanted to work on how to participate more and be meaningful in conversations about vidding. In my own way I did that, but I thought and talked more about vidding than I did actual vidding. I don't think I'll ever be able to talk fluidly about vidding because I don't translate the things in my head to words well. I cannot even count how many times at VVC I tried to think of a word and couldn't, stuttered for 30 seconds and gave up. I know I'm not verbally gifted, especially when it comes to something that I don't talk about, like vidding or art. I think I did ok, but probably came off like a tool.

While not strictly about vidding, I did learn that VVC is far different than what I expected. I tried to hang out with as many different people as I could. It's a lot more of a social arena than I expected. I thought it was going to be a hair-braiding, love fest and it's not. There's still rude people and people with stupid, uninformed opinions. It's exactly like a real world only with more glitter. I learned that the people I like online aren't the people I like in person and the people I dislike online aren't the people I dislike in person. That's a complicated way of saying that I learned that people didn't behave the way I expected for the better and the worse.

I also learned to look at my vidding catalog more analytically. I wrote meta this year too, Vidding as My Own Flavor of Feminism. I want to try vidding female characters that do more than beat people up and make things explode while being pretty.

And [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 pointed out that I've been rendering wrong my whole vidding life, which I didn't know. I am FAILBOAT.

Oh, and what I thought was clipping was really me pulling an entire movie or a tons of episodes into Sony Vegas and trimming from there. Oops. FAILBOAT REDUX.

Things to work on
I sent the wrong file into VVC for the DVDs this year, so next year I will be very careful when I'm rendering and naming so that I don't send it a file with stray frames like a douchecanoe. This year I'm going to focus on making vids that have higher quality video instead of lower quality for artistic reasons that make them muddy.

Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this upcoming year
Every time I say to myself, "self, you are going to finish this vid this year," I don't do it. I will say that I'm going to make a premiere for WisCon. (Everyone should make a premiere for WisCon.) I have a WIP in mind for a Vidukon premiere too, but I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it. I have a Doctor Who vid that would be cool for CVV and an idea for a VVC Premiere as well. With VVC Challenge being Amnesty, I want to finish an old idea for that. [livejournal.com profile] kuwdora saw all my WIPs, so she can't tell.

Resolutions for 2013
Go to VVC again and hope that my school doesn't have another in-service on the dates.

I am planning to put together a femslash vidshow with lots of premieres for VVC2013 if everything pans out.

I'm going to use smaller journals for vidding, which makes them portable because writing on my arms and hands is not cute at 26. That and people shouldn't be able to read "dress = power" and wonder what drugs I'm on. Plus, I feel accomplished when I finish a journal. My first vidding journal was massive and took years to fill.

Sorkin Supercut of the Day: It appears The Newsroom will be a mere rearrangement of the same tired perfectly crafted lines that Aaron Sorkin has used for every project since the early ’90s. (That being said, I'm going to watch it anyway.)

Ingenious editor Kevin Porter borrowed scenes from:

Malice
A Few Good Men
Bulworth
Sports Night
The West Wing
Studio 60
Charlie Wilson’s War
The Social Network
and for some reason, Tom Hanks’ 1993 Oscar speech.

February
06 - Brand New Key (Pulp Fiction) - Some people say I've done alright for a girl.
It's my own little take on the movie. I remember watching it when I was very young and wanting it to be more about Mia Wallace, Honey Bunny, Fabienne, Esmarelda, Jodi & Trudi, Raquel, and even the waitress that corrects Pumpkin with flat confidence. I watched the insanely edited version that was on tv, so I fell in love with a horribly cut up and pasted together movie. I watched the VHS of it so much that it warped (the same way my Mary Poppins tape did). My aunt rented me the original version to watch and my mind was blown because it made actual sense.

April
13 - Spit the Devil (V the Series) - Erica/Anna: firedogs
The series was never as good as when these two were on screen together. There was a sizzle and smolder when they interacted because they were two powerful, willful, strong, intelligent characters on opposite ends of a spectrum. While opposing each other, they were quite similar in their actions, motivations, and emotional status. Together they would have been a flash fire that destroyed everything around them. I only wish that it was possible to watch, therefore, I created an alternate universe where we could see those Ladies of War interact on a sexual and romantic level.

July
13 - Lullaby (Damages) - Ray Fiske's life spent trying to do well.
There has never been a character that filled me with such sadness and sorrow as this one. He never lived his life for himself. It becomes his purpose to make everyone else's life work and to fix the problems of others, but he pushed aside his own needs and feelings. When it did finally address them, the results were not entirely favorable and he spent the rest of his life seemingly crushed under the weight of his own weaknesses like a broken puppy.

August
14 - Bright Star (Bright Star) - Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath, And so live ever--or else swoon to death.
I wanted something delicate and light in the editing and I wanted to capture a mood and atmosphere with it like falling in love when you find it hard to breathe and everything slows down and speeds up like you're dying inside.

14 - Black Dove (January) (Doctor Who) - River Song was a January girl, she never let on how insane it was.
Fuck Yeah River Song and other unconventional aspects of her great and powerful awesomeness.

December
21 - Somewhere Only We Know (Winnie the Pooh) - I'm getting old and I need something to rely on.
I have loved Winnie the Pooh from my first memory. It is like the pain from an old wound soothed.

Second to lastly, I'm adding coolest thing that happened to me vidding-wise
The BAMF [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu has started creating monthly vidder profiles featuring an audio interview with the vidder over excerpts from his or her vids. I was the August Vidder Profile. I discussed my frequent use of sexual or violent source material, my take on vidding as an art form, my concepts, my influences and more.

I made a Whiskey vidlet, The Night, with the prompts: Dollhouse, epitaph one, The Night by Morphine for the Itty-Bitty Viddy Ficcy Thon.

VID RECS:
[livejournal.com profile] danegen's Slobo Babe (Lesbian Vampire Killers) - Has me LOLZ-ing forever. The movie is complete crack and it's well used in the vid with good timing.

[livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss's A Charming Man (Supernatural) - Excellent song choice, interesting lyrical interpretation coupled with brillant musicality in the visuals.

[livejournal.com profile] newkidfan's Human & Monster (Supernatural) - A beautifully subdued pair of companion vidlets that feel bittersweet and sad.

FIC REC:
[livejournal.com profile] serrico's Primogeniture is a Supernatural fic of Claire, Castiel's vessel's daughter, set post-Rapture that hurts in a good way.

Lastly, I've become a resident of Zombieland by zombifying myself.

Write ten confessions you want to make to ten people, but won't. Then tag ten people.

01. I'm tired of being the one trying to talk and have a relationship with you when you don't want to put any effort into it.

02. While sucking up might be your natural behavior, it still makes you come off as a brown noser.

03. You used me as motivation to leave your girlfriend, which is ok because maybe you needed something to kick start yourself, but I don't want to hear about the minimum of three woman you're banging a week.

04. I hate working with you because I end up doing your job. You're lazy, annoying, and downright stupid. Get off your cell phone and pay attention.

05. Stop flirting with me. I don't like it because your girlfriend keeps giving me dirty looks.

06. I might be in love with you. A little bit. Not a lot, but maybe I could. Sometime in the future.

07. I don't understand why you butt into my life. You pretend like we're closer than we really are and it's irritating. You don't know anything about my life, but you lie to your friends and co-workers to make yourself sound like a better person. Don't let people think I live with you when I haven't since I was 6.

08. I love you, but you need to stop with this ridiculousness. He's not going to leave his wife for you. He met her while going out with you, married her, and had a child. He didn't marry you. I'm sorry, but he wants the family life he has and he wants you on the side. I feel sorry for you mainly because you think you're in love and it makes you stupid.

09. I hate you.

10. You're pathetic and I want you to stop treating me the you do. It doesn't make any sense for you to act like that.

Wow. I actually feel a bit better after doing that. That's amazing.

I doubt a lot of people will do this, most of them freaking about VVC, but I'll tag [livejournal.com profile] millylicious, [livejournal.com profile] kuwdora, [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu, [livejournal.com profile] beccatoria, [livejournal.com profile] crickets, [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonster, and anyone else that wants to do it.
